The big issue with 1080P sets (or 1080i) is that SD reception, sadly which takes up most of OTA viewing on a few channels, sucks!!! they cannot downconvert to a quality picture and are optimized for 1080 whatever resolution. when OTA/cable/satellite goes ALL HD, then yea, it will work. but now it's a choice in perfect picture or terrible one.

To see the difference in resolution, and why new HD sets are optimized to only work well with the higher res pictures, try setting your computer's monitor display to something like 640x480 256 colors and you'll see why newer computer monitors (and HD sets) look so horrible in SD reception, as it would be the same issue with your monitor on your PC (or Mac)
