Maybe it's just me, but after a winner is declared, with only a few exceptions, the rest seem to fade into obscurity. Am I wrong? Is it just my imagination?
A lot of the non-winners tend to do better. However, I think it's important to realize that there are a lot of different areas and genres, and if a performer is locked into that they may not be mainstream and get a lot of attention. Still, I think with the success of Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, there is something to be said for winning.
I think the amount of success we see is appropriate given the nature of the process. You aren't necessarily going to have the next Madonna come from American Idol, or from anywhere specific. However, folks like Clarkson and Underwood, and Daughtry for that matter, do show how American Idol often does make successful careers.
There are many successful Idol Alums. I think the fact they have even one superstar is great because the odds are so against it. Look at other similar shows. The winners of those are rarely heard from again, even if they do get an album made.
