Dana Delany's 'Body of Proof' Renewed, Patrick Wilson's 'A Gifted Man' is Booted

As the networks continue to roll out renewals and new program orders, they are also passing out pink slips, dashing the hopes of performers and fans alike. Some of these make me happy, while others just leave me disappointed and shaking my head.

I was very pleased to hear that Dana Delany's Body of Proof will return on ABC for a third season. It is one of the few dramas on that I find to be interesting which does not include an overabundance of either the soap opera mentality or the gritty ugly mouth, as in profanity, persona. It actually seems to know when to pull back from getting overly cheesy while keeping its focus on the crimes. I like it, so I am happy to get another year of it.

On the other hand, I am mixed about the cancellation of A Gifted Man. The show was canned by CBS Sunday and had star Patrick Wilson tweeting, “Thanks for the AGM love...but now that it's ‘official,’ I couldn't be happier. As good as it was (sometimes) it was not what I signed on for.”

This actually makes me feel validated. When A Gifted Man first began, I was super intrigued. Wilson played a highly successful, somewhat arrogant, totally into himself neurosurgeon who suddenly runs into his ex-wife, Anna, played by Jennifer Ehle. Imagine his surprise when he realizes she's a spirit or ghost or something paranormal. This relationship, with Anna spurring on her ex to be a more humane person, was awesome. However, after adding Rachelle Lefevre to the cast as the doctor running Anna's old clinic, the stories shifted until, as I feared during weeks of watching, they began to head Wilson and Lefevre towards a romance. Bad move.

I lost interest and the intrigue was gone. It turned into a predictable soap opera, leaving the spiritual edge that it began with behind. So, part of me is glad it was cancelled and wonders if Wilson's disappointment was also with the new direction of the show, which definitely had veered from its original course.

Wilson's tweets also revealed that he didn't even learn of the cancellation from the network, which he deemed to be classless. I agree, but it's not the first time a network has shown such ill regard for its stars, either.

At any rate, bravo for the return of Body of Proof. At least it remains to give me something to look forward to.
