Default Free comcast basic cable box?

We received a note in the mail about Comcast switching basic cable over to digital which will require a converter box. Not happy about that, and even though we have an HDTV I guess we still need a converter box. Is there anyway to get a set top box for Comcast cable for free or do we have to pay the monthly fee? Or is there any way around this?

The only free is if you don't have any cable at all, in which case they are required to give you 8 rotating channels. If you have at least one box you pay for, you can get their basic "box" that is free. It gives you channels 1-99. It is a very teeny, tiny box, not at all like the regular boxes, although they are all getting smaller.
