Default What's the best way to amplify signal?

We want to add 3 more outlets in our house so I'm going to need to route some cable upstairs into the walls. I want to get a 4-way splitter but am concerned with signal loss once I start splitting off of an already split cable. Hope that makes sense. Will I need an amplifier you think?

Is this for cable television? Or is this a cable to an outdoor, over-the-air antenna?

Just one note... keep in mind that any 4-way splitter is really three 2-way splitters, and how they're arrayed affects the reality impact of splitting on the signal coming from each output. You could end up with four equal outputs, or one might be better than the rest, one "in between" and then the other two most adversely affected (for example).

If you're doing this for cable, make sure you use a splitter rated for cable. Most of them that are rated for cable are called 2GHZ splitters.

I was told by the installer that the coaxial can only carry a max of 4 cable boxes (3 in some homes). But of course I have phone and internet as well. You're really pushing the limits and will probably experience a lot of line noise on your tv's.

To add a splitter has a decibal loss of about 3.5 dbmv's. I know that is technical blahblah, but if you are splitting already this is how it would look for example.

1. Splitter with 2 outputs.
a. Coax into splitter
i. Output 1 will have a loss of 3.5 dbmv. So for example if you have 10dbmv into the splitter, it will drop to 6.5dbmv
ii. Output 2 will have a loss of 3.5 dbmv too which will leave you with an output signal of 6.5.

b. So if you have a splitter already and your signal has dropped to 6.5 dbmv's and you begin to split again you will lose an additional 3.5 dbmv's which will bring your signal level on the second split out of output 1, 2, 3, and 4 to look like this below
i. Output 1 6.5 dbmv into splitter with an output of 2.5 dbmv
ii. Output 2 6.5 dbmv into splitter with an output of a -.5 dbmv's
** note on 3 and 4 way splitters the signal loss on outputs 2-3 and 2-4 are doubled from the 3.5 to a whopping 7 dbmv signal loss.

I really hope this helps. I would suggest calling us to have an installer come and do this work for you as well will professionally install and amplify the signals appropriately.
