• American Crime Story Trailer, Feat. Cuba Gooding Jr. as O.J. Simpson

The trial of O.J. Simpson remains one of the most talked about court cases even twenty years after its resolution. Books have been written, references have been made, and on February 2nd a television series entitled American Crime Story: The People vs O.J. Simpson will premiere to tell the story of one of the most famous U.S. court cases of recent memory.

Brought to you by Ryan Murphy, the creator of American Horror Story and Scream Queens, the trailer promises high octane drama as it fictitiously retells the events of the People of the State of California vs Orenthal James Simpson. Like American Horror Story, Murphy’s new series will be an anthology. The first season will cover the O.J. Simpson trial and any subsequent seasons will focus on various other historic court cases.

It’s clear from the trailer that the series’ creators spared no expense on its debut season. The trailer featured high caliber acting talent, such as Cuba Gooding Jr. as O.J. Simpson, John Travolta as Robert Sharpio, David Schwimmer as Robert Kardashian, and Selma Blair as Kris Jenner.

If you’re not a fan of Murphy’s previous work, you can rest easy. He is a producer, but American Crime Story was created by Scott Alexander and Larry Kraszewski, the screenwriters behind Ed Wood, The People vs Larry Flynt and Man on the Moon. It’s pretty safe to assume the series, or at least season one, will be met with a gritty, serious tone one would expect from a series based on a real murder case – unlike many of the criticisms placed on American Horror Story and Scream Queens.

For those who aren’t aware of the high profile case, the trial against O.J. Simpson began on November 2nd, 1994, after the defendant had been charged with the murder of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and a waiter named Ronald Lyle Goodman in June 1994. Simpson, who was widely recognized for his work as a professional American football player and actor, put together a high-profile defense team consisting of Robert Sharpio, Johnnie Cochran and Robert Kardashian along with seven other lawyers in various specialized fields of expertise. Nicknamed “The Trial of the Century”, the case lasted for eight months before Simpson was acquitted.

The verdict, which occurred at 10am on October 3rd, 1995, is estimated to have been listened to and watched by over 100 million people. The amount of work ceased as people tuned in is estimated to have cost $480 million in lost productivity. What case could the showrunners possibly follow up with in season 2 that would rival the O.J. trial’s popularity? Casey Anthony?

American Crime Story is set to premiere on Tuesday, February 2nd, 2016 on FX.
