    BIG NEWS!!

Dish is in a contract dispute with The Weather Channel. They have actually just started their own weather channel called The Weather Cast. It is available in both SD and HD on channel 213.

DISH Network Launches The Weather Cast
New State-Of-The-Art Service Features All Weather, All The Time

ENGLEWOOD, Colo., May 20, 2010 /PRNewswire via COMTEX News Network/ -- DISH Network L.L.C., America's fastest-growing pay-TV provider, today introduced The Weather Cast, a new 24-hour weather service featuring live round-the-clock weather reporting, interactive forecasting, and real-time national storm tracking. DISH Network is the first and only television provider to offer a national "all weather, all the time" service to its customers. The Weather Cast will replace The Weather Channel, which has recently moved away from weather reporting to a mix of movies and other entertainment-focused programming.

"Our customers always tell us that the only thing they want in a weather channel is weather reporting," said Dave Shull, senior vice president of Programming. "We believe The Weather Cast is the best available weather service in America."

In contrast to The Weather Channel, The Weather Cast devotes 100 percent of its program schedule to weather reporting. There are no movies, no wake up shows and no stories about storms. Further, because its program schedule is all forecasting, it means that The Weather Cast has more time to focus on local weather. The Weather Channel is customized for cable and has never offered satellite customers the localization they require. Dish is about to send a note to all subscribers..

    Dear Valued DISH Network Customer,

DISH Network is pleased to announce that The Weather Cast will replace The Weather Channel on DISH Network Channel 214. DISH Network is dedicated to providing the best weather programming possible and we are pleased to now offer The Weather Cast as our primary channel for local and national weather.

Our contract with The Weather Channel is expiring and they are demanding unreasonable contract terms that would impact customer pricing. We felt that the pending contract expiration presented an ideal opportunity to respond to feedback from customers who have been asking for better weather programming.

The Weather Cast is designed specifically for satellite TV customers and has the advantage of better local coverage. The Weather Cast offers coverage in 8,000 more zip codes than The Weather Channel and provides better local and national weather and advanced storm tracking, while still sticking to its core mission of delivering the weather information you asked for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

In addition to The Weather Cast on channel 214, DISH Network will be providing additional weather programming in the coming months on channel 213. Stay tuned for even more weather coverage or sign up for The Weather Cast enhancement email updates.
Update Today 04:38 PM: Now all of a sudden, the HD channel is gone. I guess there are bugs to be worked out.

Update Today 04:54 PM: Now the SD version of The Weather Cast has just been replaced by The Weather Channel. This is all happening faster than a play by play at the ball park!

Update Today 04:57 PM: The Weather Cast is now back in both HD and SD.

It looks like Dish and The Weather Channel may have come to some kind of agreement. It is now more than 5 hours after it was supposed to be gone and everything is quiet and TWC is still on Dish. There should be more news later.

Weather Channel Still On Dish As Carriage Talks Continue
Satellite TV Operator Previously Said It Planned to Swap Out 28-Year-Old Service
By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 5/21/2010 2:01:00 PM
As of 2 p.m. Eastern Friday, The Weather Channel was still on Dish Network as the parties continued to negotiate carriage terms following the expiration of their previous deal.

Dish's previous deal to carry The Weather Channel expired at 12:01 a.m. Eastern on May 21.

On Thursday, Dish announced that it planned to replace Weather Channel -- which would make it the first major distributor to drop the 28-year-old cable channel -- with Weather Cast, a 24-hour service produced by WeatherNation LLC, a startup based in Excelsior, Minn.

If Dish were to drop The Weather Channel, that would eliminate about 14 million homes from the network's 100-million-household reach.

Dish, exhibiting its notoriously hard-nosed negotiating tactics, said on a section of its site set up for customers that "our contract with The Weather Channel is expiring and they are demanding unreasonable contract terms that would impact customer pricing. We felt that the pending contract expiration presented an ideal opportunity to respond to feedback from customers who have been asking for better weather programming."

That page on Dish's site had been removed as of Friday morning.

According to Dish's previous statement, The Weather Channel "has recently moved away from weather reporting to a mix of movies and other entertainment-focused programming."

In a statement Thursday, The Weather Channel said, "Despite negotiations over the past several months, Dish has chosen to be the first distributor to drop The Weather Channel, rather than pay the standard industry rates others in the industry have already agreed to pay... We are disappointed with their decision and hopeful that we can still reach an agreement with Dish Network and bring this highly valued network back to its customers."
The new Weather Cast looks interesting in that it's a place to go for satellite subscribers to get a faster forecast when TWC is off doing Storm Stories or Weather and a Flick. Who knows? DirecTV might even pick this one up too.

Well now, The Weather Cast has been removed from Dish Network. That has to be some kind of record! The channel lasted 3.5 days!

Also, Dish and The Weather Channel have announced that they have come to a long term agreement. Here is the press release.

DISH Network and The Weather Channel Reach Agreement
Includes development of new full-time weather forecasting services

DISH Network L.L.C. and The Weather Channel today announced that they have reached a multi-year agreement for continued distribution of The Weather Channel on DISH Network's programming platform.

The deal provides for collaboration between both companies in developing state-of-the-art, full-time weather forecasting services designed specifically for satellite customers, including localized weather programming on DISH Network Ch. 213 (in addition to The Weather Channel's main feed on Ch. 214), interactive TV applications, as well as new Internet and mobile services. Deployment of the new services will begin this summer.

"Through this new partnership with The Weather Channel, DISH Network is giving our subscribers exactly what they've asked for and more. Not only are we developing a unique satellite service that provides localized weather 24/7, but also we'll soon deliver personalized weather reports via the Android mobile platform and the web," said Dave Shull, senior vice president of Programming for DISH Network. "This agreement recognizes the importance of cross-platform video delivery, ensuring that our subscribers will have the most detailed local weather information available at their fingertips anytime, anywhere."

"DISH Network and their customers are extremely important to us, and maintaining and expanding our partnership is a high priority for our company," said Mike Kelly, CEO and President of The Weather Channel. "DISH Network will now be carrying two of our channels - The Weather Channel and a customized 24-hour, all-local weather information network - to provide even better service to their customers. We also look forward to working with DISH Network on other cross-platform and interactive initiatives, taking advantage of our leadership position in mobile and the Internet."

Additional terms of the deal were not disclosed.
