  • Facebook "National Unfriend Day" is Wednesday

Jimmy KimmelA new holiday is trying to capture the cyber world's attention. Dubbed as National Unfriend Day, the event is being pushed by TV comedian and talk show host, Jimmy Kimmel.

The chosen day is Wednesday, November 17, and so far the support for the unusual celebration has included Star Trek's William Shatner and Friend's star, Lisa Kudrow.

The concept behind the fake holiday is for surfers with Facebook to spend time weeding out their 'friends', eliminating those who really don't matter to them, people who are not truly their friends.

Shatner told Kimmel, "These people on Facebook, they're not your friends. You want to know who your friends are? Post a status update that says 'I'm moving this weekend and I need help.' The people that respond? Those are your friends! Everyone else isn't."

Actress Lisa Kudrow also gave her support by dropping by the show and delivering a straightforward lecture on the meaning of real friendship.

With all of the recent attention given to hacking and identity theft, cleaning out the Facebook friends section might not be a bad idea. Of course, not everyone is on board, especially those who love the status of having more friends than anyone else.

So, the question is, what does friendship really mean to the individual? National Unfriend Day might just tell the story on that one.

What a bunch of crap! Jimmy, you mind your own Facebook page, and I'll mind my own! I like to keep friends simply because, maybe....just maybe, they enjoy some of my posts once in awhile. I hope I have a positive and humorous effect on all of them, regardless of whether they talk to me or not!

Trust me, most of their eyes glaze over when they read (if they read) other's posts. Most people just like to do their own posts, not really caring about what the heck anybody else has to say. Not that I blame them.
      Jimmy's got a great idea!
Check out his parody tonight called "Breaking News"-making fun of typical Facebook posts.
"I had a yummy dinner today."
"I just took out the garbage".
      "Everybody else sucks but me."
      Typical stupid stuff.
      Who cares.
      What a waste of time.
Go for a jog, clean your closets, read a book.
