In the hour-long drama, Shanks plays the highly successful and engaged Charlie Harris, the Chief of Surgery at Torontos Hope-Zion Hospital. His fiancee, played by Durance, is Alex Reid, who is also a surgeon. Everything is lovey dovey until Harris is in an automobile accident and ends up in a coma. It will be one long coma, too, because the crux of the story, at least in its first 13 weeks on the air, is Harris roaming the halls of the hospital while Reid and other staff members try to deal with medical emergencies while also praying for his recovery. However, hints have been made that things could change by the end of the run or if the show is picked up for a second season.
Shanks is best known for starring as Dr. Daniel Jackson on Stargate SG-1, a role he played for over a decade. Durance's chief fame comes from her portrayal of Lois Lane in Smallville. The two actors have worked together before. First was when Durance guest starred on Stargate SG-1 in 2004. The second was when Shanks had a recurring role on Smallville as Hawkman.
Currently filming in Toronto, Saving Hope also features Daniel Gillies.
