Katie Holmes Files for Divorce from Tom Cruise

It may have shocked many movie and TV fans today to wake up to the news that Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are getting a divorce. Cruise, of course, is one of today's leading actors with a long line of credits that include The Outsiders, Top Gun, and Mission: Impossible. Holmes gained notoriety on NBC's pop hit series, Dawson's Creek, following it up with movies like Batman Begins and the TV mini-series, The Kennedys.

Cruise, previously married to actresses Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman, made headline news several years ago when he appeared on Oprah! and, while expressing his new love for Holmes, jumped all over the Oprah couch. His exuberance has been debated for years ever since.

The couple became engaged in June of 2005, just a few months after Holmes had ended her previous lengthy engagement to American Pie actor, Chris Klein. They had been together for five years. Cruise and Holmes married with several other notable stars in attendance on November 18, 2006 in Italy. Their daughter, Suri, was born earlier that year, on April 18, 2006.

Representatives for both Hollywood talents have requested the usual respect for their privacy, with Cruise's rep adding that he is "saddened" by the filing for divorce, which was done by Holmes.
