Default Digital Tuner Channels

Why do the digital converter boxes that are selling in the market only tune channels 2 to 69 when the digital tuners that come with HDTV's are capable of tuning channels well above 69?

Is there any after market digital tuner available that will tune digital channels above 69?

After June 12, 2009 there won't be any digital channels above 60. Anything above 60 isn't stable for digital transmissions.

I actually found the answer to my question elsewhere. The digital tuners in the market only support ATSC tuning. To get digital channels above 69 a QAM tuner is required.

Due to the shortsightedness of the US govt the requirement for digital transition is to only support ATSC tuner. Hence this is what all the digital tuners in the market are supporting.

Most HDTV's come with ATSC, QAM and NTSC tuners.

I wouldn't exactly call it shortsightedness. The main purpose of the coupon program and coupon eligible converter boxes was to alleviate the cost of converting analog televisions to receive digital signals. Not to upgrade analog televisions for use with cable. That's the cable companies problem or the person subscribing to cable. Just my $.02.
