Any recommendations for a good converter box?
All the one's I've found so far, and I've looked almost everywhere, do not come particularly well recommended.
For example, at Best Buy:
Apex - Digital-to-Analog Converter for Analog TVs - DT250
Only 2 stars out of five and only 24% of people would recommend this product to a friend. This is typical of most of what I've found.
amazon.com Zinwell ZAT-970A $40. Amazon.com: Zinwell ZAT-970A Digital to Analog TV Converter Box: Gateway
This is the best sounding one I've found so far. 4/5 stars. The price is right. But the remote is widely reported to stink, and the timer recording is sketchy. Is this about the best that can be expected?
None of them really were well manufactured. I have 2 RCA, 1 Zenith, 1 Insignia (LG), and a DTVpal. They are still working by some miracle.
Here's a chart that was last updated feb 2009. Most of these units are out of production!
DTV converter boxes, Ratings
The Zinwell is rated high for picture, but its guide is... well, basic. The DTVpal has such an awesome guide I use it on an input to my HDTV, just for the guide! (Also out of production, and early units had problems)

Mr Pogi is correct, that many Converter boxes were poorly designed and many have failed. I have a DTV-PAL and it regularly shut itself down from overheating, so I drilled 20-some holes in the case to get the heat out.
Also, some Converter Boxes do not pass analog signals, so if you live near either the Canadian or Mexican border and currently receive analog TV signals from either Country, the box must have a function called analog-passthru. The same thing applies for some low-power analog translators in the US.
As an example, the Channel Master CM-7000 Converter box will not pass analog signals, but it is far superior to any other box I have tested receiving digital signals: in fact, its ability to lock onto weak signals is superior to the tuner built into my Sony Bravia. (note: the CM-7000 is only required to decipher SD signals, so its not a fair fight) The CM box is made in Bulgaria rather than China.
Doesn't anyone like the Dish Network DTVPal? I like mine.

I have the DTV Pal Plus and I like it. It's not perfect though and has caused some problems but on the whole, it does its job ... still.
