Channel Master CM-7001 converter
I'm looking at buying this unit (finally) tomorrow and thought I'd just check experiences with the unit and/or purchase history with Summit Source that seems to have the best price. I'll be connecting it to a Sony Trinitron Wega model # Sony KV-34HS420 which has an HDMI input for 1080i display.

I read some negatives about that recently. Lemme see if I can find it ...
K, read this thread:

I'm afraid Fringe is going to be disappointed. CM is not CM any more. Read something shomewhere else about a sound issue. Can't find it now. Not saying it's a terrible machine ... No personal experience ...

Doesn't seem that there are many alternatives. I don't want DVR but I do want at least hdmi over the s-video output on the CM 7000, even though it reportedly has a better tuner. I did read some favorable reviews on the 7001, so I guess I'm pretty much stuck with my choice. Spending $120 is already quite high which is getting close to half the cost of a flat screen with comparable screen size anyways. I'm tired of bidding on eBay for the 7000 at $60-80, so I'm willing to pay more for the 7001 new. Sure wish OTA would gain some more traction and attention in the marketplace!

Received the unit on Friday and I've been enjoying it all weekend......wish I would have bought it sooner. I did have to do a little figuring to get the cable runs correct. I had DirecTV sometime ago and had planned on using the existing cabling until I found out that the Att uverse installer cut the damn ends off!
I have come up with one issue. I've noticed my speakers are "popping" and it doesn't seem isolated to any channel, so it's either the box or the signal? Any thoughts? I have a splitter outside under the eave where the directv splitter was installed then the cable runs inside and the run for the new box is much longer then the other tv.

Are you using HDMI or Component to connect the converter to the TV? Since the signal is digital to the converter it shouldn't cause any "popping." It may be the converter, or your TV.

HDMI. The signal strength on most channels is in the 30% range. Now I'm losing the sound altogether in short bursts!

How did this end up for you? Still have the sound problems? I'm thinking of buying the same thing but you have now given me pause. Like you said though, not too many other options. I have a component projector without any tuner, so right now it's just a big DVD-capable theater.

I really like the unit. I haven't fixed the problem but fell extremely confident that it is a degradation of signal in the wiring to this tv. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another or recommend the unit as the picture quality is very good.
