Default moving strategy

Hi everyone! I've had Directv for about four years, and have been relatively satisfied with the service. But now Im moving, and since my two year contract on HD isnt finished,Im due to be penalized $280.The two family house Im moving to does'nt allow satellite dishes on their roof.Directv tells me that if I cancel that they wont remove the dish, which is three stories up.Im thinking of trying to convince the new place to allow me to put a satellite on a stand. If not, could I tell Directv that Im moving and suspend the contract. Also, could I just act like Im keeping the service so that they remove the dish, and then cancel later?I dont feel like getting charged another fee to remove the dish, and I certainly dont want to risk going up there! Thanks

DirecTV is not a customer friendly company. I would not advise doing anything illegal, and lying would essentially be illegal. I'd take your losses and never use them again.

If you own half the building, then you have say about putting stuff on the roof. If you're renting, or the building is owned by an association/condo/co-op/etc., then the OTARD regulations (a federal law) prohibit outright bans on satellite dishes. It only allows reasonable restrictions, but not outright bans.

Where would the stand be? If it is on a semi-private porch, terrace, deck or patio, OTARD would surely prohibit the new place from precluding you doing what you wish in this regard. To be clear, they cannot restrict satellite dishes because they are unsightly, unless they are a registered historical district, and even then there are limits on the restrictions that they can apply.

As indicated above, tell DirecTV the truth, regardless.
