standard converter box

I am going to have Direct TV installed this week and want to
know what channels a TV would receive if you did not
use a converter box and only hooked a "cable ready" tv direct
to the signal.

You wouldn't receive any channels without their box. You can't connect a cable ready TV up to directv or dish network satellite. You would need to have a satellite receiver connected to the TV.

You'll definitely need a DirecTV receiver to connect between the wall outlet and your TV. It's what decodes the signal.
