I'm looking for a universal remote that is compatible with my DirecTV HD DVR. I'd like to get away with spending no more than $50 but if there's one that's really good for a bit more, I might go for it.

Any of the Harmony remotes would almost surely do the job. All the codes for almost every remote in existence are online. To me, this is a better solution than a "self programming" remote, cause then, when the batteries go dead, you're looking for all the OLD remotes, plus batteries for THEM, and reprogramming, blah, blah, blah. The Harmony 300 or 300i are under $20 refurbished on eBay.
What you can do is go to Logitech Harmony® Remotes - One Touch Changes Everything , enter the model number of your DVR, and make sure it's in their database. I'd lay 10 to 1 it's in there.

Try the Logitech Harmony 1100 Universal Remote with Color Touch Screen. They are awesome and are a joy to work with. They will be the one-stop control for all your media adjustments.
