Default Upgrading to HD

Bought a new Sony HD TV 2 weeks ago and I'd like to upgrade my current contract with DirecTV to one of their HD packages. I still have 3 months left on my contract. Do I have any room to bargain with them? I'll need just one receiver and probably a dish since i only have the dual LNB old dish.

The only way you'll ever know for sure is by calling them. I always balk at their first offer. If you've been a customer with them for a while and have kept up with your payments, you should be able to negotiate something better than their advertised deals. I say should, but it really depends on how they value you too. How many receivers are you looking for? Just 1?

I've been procrastinating to call them. Not sure how many receivers I'll need because we may get another TV around Christmas time. For now 1, but I'd like to be able to negotiate after I get the other TV. Should I just request 2 HD receivers now or do you think I'll be able to negotiate another HD receiver after I get my new TV in couple of months?

By all means, negotiate for your best deal all at once, including boxes you may need soon. Once you're locked into a new 2 year contract, you'll likely not get any more deals out of them during that period.

If they don't offer you any deal, ask to cancel service. They will connect you to Customer Retention Dept., who will offer you a deal. As HTNut said, balk at the first offer and they'll usually offer you something better.

You need to have an idea of what you want and then make the call, sounding polite but forceful. The thing is that it will just depend on who answers the phone and how much they want to help you. If you get a response you don't like, I wouldn't give up, I'd just call again at a different time and get another person.

In your conversation with them, let them know you're aware that you can get all the HD equipment from Dish Network or cable, with no up front cost to you, plus a heavily discounted programming cost for the first 6 months. (true, at least for dish)
