FCC Proposes "Voluntary" Spectrum Auction
So broadcasters, this is just voluntary....if you want to give up your little slice of the spectrum and all for the broadband providers. lol.
To persuade TV broadcasters to let go of some of their digital spectrum, The Federal Communications Commission Wednesday (Feb. 24) proposed a voluntary auction. In exchange for relinquishing a portion of their spectrum, broadcasters would receive a share of auction proceeds.
"Maximum Service Television is struck by the apparent focus on reducing spectrum now used by local television stations to achieve the Broadband Task Force's objective," the organization said in a statement. "We have exclusive use of only 5.1 percent of the so-called beachfront spectrum that broadband services desire. To this end, we have supported a spectrum inventory to assess spectrum use and demand by all entities using spectrum."

I don't think that anyone is going to "Voluntarily" give up the spectrum they have. That's like saying that I want to cripple half of my business just to please the greedy broadband robber barons so they can now use the same airwaves we now use so they can rake in excessive profits at a big cost to the consumer in the area of emergency communications.
There is simply just no other communications system in place that can reach virtually every household in this country at a moments notice. Do they (the Broadband robber barons) have any "Public Service" requirements that require them to invest in things that actually benefit the public? The answer to that is a big NO.
If enough broadcasters do not "Voluntarily" give up enough bandwidth to satisfy the robber barons, then Osama and his minions will force DTV off the air, and that is my prediction. Osama does not care in the least what the American people think as can be seen by the Health Care issue, and control is what they seek. he should be impeached for treason.
The Health Care issue is only a big smoke screen to steal away more of our freedoms and gain even more "Control" over the American public, and business in general.

This is what you call government policymaking, The Chicago Way:
In exchange for relinquishing a portion of their spectrum, broadcasters would receive a share of auction proceeds.
Translation: "See things our way, and we'll cut you in on the action."
FCC chairman Julius Genachowski revealed the "Mobile Future Auction"...
... a name which, like a dairy-farm meadow, exudes that certain fragrance of impartial, objective deliberations on the subject, no?
"the Mobile Future Auction is a win-win proposal: for broadcasters, who win more
Payola?
flexibility to pursue business models to serve their local communities...
"If you don't see things our way, we'll threaten to sic the IRS on your butts, just like we did to the attorneys representing the GM and Chrysler bondholders a year ago."
and for the public, which
Gets to enjoy another opportunity to take advantage of 'gifts' that keep on taking, month after month, from their wallets and purses...
wins ... the benefits of the proceeds of new and substantial auction revenues"
"Which we, the benevolent, enlightened scions of all-seeing, all-knowing, all-encompassing government, will spend on your behalf. For your own benefit, of course. Because we know better than you. Don't believe us? See that man lurking in that shadow over there? He's an IRS agent..."
Funny... he overlooked mentioning "further opportunities for large corporations to shovel more blocks of Benjamins into the coffers of my boss's endless campaign." Wonder how such a bright fellow could've missed that...
Few broadcasters are likely to bite.
Hope your accountants have all those receipts lined up and you've got your tax attorneys on speed dial, boys. Yer gonna need 'em...

Uh-oh... Prepare to be targeted by one of Davey "Astroturfin 'R Us" Axelrod's campaigns in which seemingly millions of letters and Internet posts appear overnight, every single one calling you a bunch of CORPORATE FASCISTS! and STOOGES FOR THE RICH!
They sure seem to know a lot about stooges in Chicago, don't they?
"We have exclusive use of only 5.1 percent of the so-called beachfront spectrum that broadband services desire."
Never mind resorting to truth and logic, fellas. The only way to deal with this crew is to reach into your own bag of dirty tricks. Or bag of money. Your choice...
"To this end, we have supported a spectrum inventory to assess spectrum use and demand by all entities using spectrum."
Guess you didn't get the memo, did you? It read, "If you don't grease our palms heavily, you don't get to demand anything -- but you should start praying that no, ahem, 'unfortunate accidents' happen. Like a catastrophic fire at the studio. Or a really intrusive, painstakingly niggling audit. Just sayin'."
"As a one-to-many transmission medium, broadcasters are ready to make the case that we are far and away the most efficient users of spectrum in today's communications marketplace."
Didn't we already mention that appeals to logic won't get you anywhere, Mr. Wharton? Here's what will: Portraits of famous deceased Americans *nudge* appearing on green, rectangular pieces of paper *nudge* issued by the Federal Reserve System *wink* and delivered to the proper sets of fingers *wink*...
The only way we're going to end this threat is to get rid of this guy, and the only way to make that happen is to get rid of his boss at the ballot box. Capice?
