Direct TV at vacation home

I know i can take one of my recievers with me to the vacation site but i have heard you must not watch from both locations.
What if I am not watching at home but my DVR is recording at home while I was watching Direct TV from the vacation home, would that count as watching from 2 locations?
Do I actually need to unplug the home recievers when using the reciever away?

How often do you go to your vacation home?

Reason why I ask is because it's recommended that you call DirecTV and inform them of what you're doing. If you have more than 1 receiver (more than the one you're taking), you should probably have the other receivers on hold/suspended.

It's definitely a grey area that isn't really enforced by DirecTV but if I were you, I would error on the side of caution.

Depending on where your vacation home is, you will definitely lose the local channels if you're outside that local spot beam. That's something to think about.

Not really. All you have to do is contact DirectTV and tell them to change to locals to where ever you are. They do it for me and have been for the last 8 years. I go back and forth between Ohio and CT. I have homes in each state. They even installed all new equipment at the "vacation" home and all we do is run the receiver back and forth.

However, if you have two receivers you should be getting billed an extra $5 for the second receiver. You CAN carry the second receiver back and forth as you want to , but I think if they changed your account to put your locals at the vacation home, your main site would not get the local channels. I know that all you need to do is hook the DirectTV receiver up at your vacation home and it WILL get everything other than locals. Now that I have two receivers I just do without the locals when at the vacation home.

I hooked up my recv but could not locate satellite, am wondering why. I have a fairly new HD dish and a new standard def recvr I'm about 175 miles from home. Do I need to reaim the dish?

I think you can fairly use your extra DTH receiver as long as you don't overdo it.

Will that work with my husband's situation. He recently rented an apartment in Kansas city where he works to help with the expense of gas traveling 2 1/2 hours each way every day to work. Can you take one of our 4 receivers with him for the apartment?

Yes, you can take your extra reciever anywhere you want as long as you have a dish set up at the locations. It is a gray area now at Direct TV, however I imagine it will be against the law in the future.

You're not supposed to have the service active in both locations. It is a violation of the customer agreement and they will make you get a 2nd account if you abuse it.

But that's not your biggest concern. The biggest concern is the spot beam locals. If your vacation home is in a different spot beam you won't get locals at your regular home if you call up directv and "move" to your vacation home for the duration of your vacation because they will switch your locals to your vacation home address. This is a big deal if you're recording network shows on your DVR.

But if you're in the same spot beam or your home DMA is NYC or LA you won't lose your locals because they are on Conus beam.

Mobile receivers do not have this problem because they are GPS enabled and shut off the locals once you are outside the DMA.

Not really a grey area. You can use one account in two locations if you only use one at a time. The exception is RVs and vehicles. There is a specific exemption for them I believe.

This has to do with the law that governs distribution of local channels.
