No, no problem at all. Let SS know. Again, I'm not sure the source of the error. Could be from marketing at AD or entry error at SS. I am surprised that AD hasn't noticed the error and asked for a correction as well...

Based on polar plots they sent me a while back, it appears to have a BW of around 20-35 deg depending on frequency. --- Project

That would be typical of an 8 bay.

I doubt that they have the time go looking at the websites of the dealers and distributors of their products....their antennas are sold all over the place.

True, but one would think customers would complain to both AD and SS about the misleading beamwidth claim.

"One" would give customers too much credit....

Boy, did I ever get this thread off topic......

Ive recently run across someone talking up the AntennaCraft 10G212 30 dB High Gain Pre Amplifier Antenna Mast. Looks good, and has a unique FM Trap switch on the Power Supply/Injector box....but the FM Trap itself is in the Mast Mounted Amplifier box before the amps. Plus adjustable gain, also on the power supply box.

Seems really handy. Specs arent bad at all, but not the cleanest. Aparently this was also sold under Radio Shack branding.

I think Ill pick one up. Not a bad price on those either.

AntennaCraft also has 2 newer models (apparently the above has been around for 40 years), 10G202 and 10G201, with 29 dB and 16 dB gain, and lower noise specs. But I like the functionality of the oldie but goldie.

Rick,
I have two apologies to make, one for taking so long to reply. I really don't like this weather going from hot to cold, and have been a bit under from it.
Secondly, this is a link to...
Antennas Direct DB8 (See Product Features - First line)
which is where I got the ref to 100° Beamwidth. I suppose one could continue to check and see if they "fixed" it.

Now for the Spread-Sheet entrys...
As I proceeded through the links, I ran across where I saw...
Tom/tczernec explanation of the entry's.
I do have some questions about those, as follows...

1) Balun loss in dB
I thought it was a given, that Baluns should be valued at 3 dB, and he's saying 1.5 dB which I used! I've looked at the Spec Sheets on several, and have not found where ANY of them tell about the Insertion Loss.
Is there some Chart/Reference where one could look up a given Balun ?

2) Preamp gain in dB
No problem here.

3) Preamp NF in dB
None here either.

4) Cable/splitter losses in dB
At one time, I looked up Belden RG6, and as I recall, it was about 7 dB per 100 ft.
So, what I see for this one is, get the TOTAL linear footage for your whole system, and multiply it by 0.07 for total dB loss, right ?
Additionally, one must take the loss for EACH Splitter, 2w-3dB, 4w-7dB etc, and add all the above up for this entry, right ?

Then there was an entry for...
Receiver NF (dB)
I'll have to take his word for it, cause I looked through all the Manuals I have on my stuff, and none of them say anything about this. The entry was 6 dB for one TV apparently.
What should you enter for 4 TV's (24 dB) ?

And then the sum of the equations via the...
Spreadsheet at Google
Calculated System NF (dB)
He goes on to list several Amplifiers he's checked, but, I suppose I seriously missed something here, cause I see nowhere, where it says
a "Go or No Go" for a given amp as it relates to a given location.
Using an example of the...
Antennas Direct PA-18 (Gain-15dB/Noise 2.8dB)
The total is 4.98 dB, is that ok or not ?
What is the hinge point, of no go ?
Is that mentioned on some other Chart or Post somewhere ?

I'm sure there will be even more questions.

Have a good Day !
S.W.

SW, Holl_ands calculations are explained below.

Estimating power input at pre-amp and tv tuner

Holl_ands, a well respected communications engineer, has developed a table that shows max input values for several popular pre-amps. The table is available here: (see: Signal Amplifiers (Amps, Preamps, Distro Amps) - See Chart in Post #1 - Digital Forum).

Example calculations are shown below for power input at the pre-amp and power input at the tv tuner. Holl_ands calculations require a tvfool report for the location. Identify the high power channels (see power column on tvfool report). Strong channels within band are those within 6 dBm of the highest channel. Make a separate list for UHF and VHF channels.

Here are tvfool power projections for an example situation.

Channel 17 -33 dBm
Channel 23 -35 dBm
Channel 36 -41 dBm
Channel 31 -44 dBm
Channel 15 -50 dBm

How many strong UHF channels in this case? Two, ch 17 and 23

What is the average power input from the strong channels? (33+35)/2 = 34 dB

What is the antenna gain? 10 dB

What is the balun/cable loss? 2 dB

What is the pre-amp noise figure? Most quality pre-amps are between 2 and 3 dB, assume 3 dB.

Are there relevant environmental losses?

TV signal will be attenuated with an attic installation, presence of nearby trees, and/or aiming the antenna away from the broadcast towers. In most cases, the user will not have a direct estimate of these losses. Typical attenuation ranges for these factors are: attic (3 to 13 dB), trees (6 to15 dB), and off axis aiming (1 to 20 dB).

What is the calculated input from the strong channels?

Holl_ands calculation procedure is shown below

Average Signal Power from tvfool: -34 dBm
Adjust to peak power: +7 dB
Add in antenna gain: +10 dB
Subtract balun/cable loss: -2 dB
Subtract pre-amp noise figure: -3 dB
Subtract environmental loss: 0 dB
Input Signal at pre-amp = -22 dBm

Which pre-amp should be used in this situation?

Let’s evaluate three pre-amps and compare the max input signal from our two strong channels above versus the max input for two strong UHF channels from Holl_ands table. Please note, Holl_ands has adjustment factors for the max input depending on the number of strong channels (see bottom of table).

HDP 269 max input: -14.6 dBm
AP 8700 max input: -22.3 dBm
CM 7777 max input: -35.8 dBm

Our calculated input exceeds the max input for the CM 7777 and pre-amp overload would be a definite issue. The max input for the AP 8700 is the same as our calculated input. Minor symptoms of overload may occur such as a slight reduction in dynamic range of the pre-amp. The HDP269 is the appropriate pre-amp to use since it’s allowable input power is well above the calculated input signal.

Will we overload the tv tuner?

Holl_ands guideline is to keep the signal power below –10 dBm at the tv tuner. What would be the power level in this case (assume the distribution system includes a 2-way splitter and 100 ft rg-6 cable)?

Average Signal Power from tvfool: -34 dBm
Add in antenna gain: +10 dB
Add in pre-amp gain: +12 dB
Subtract environmental losses: 0 dB
Subtract losses (2 dB balun/cable, 3 dB preamp NF, 3.5 dB splitter, 6 dB cable): -14.5 dB

Signal power at tv tuner = -26.5 dBm, well below the threshold that influences tuner sensitivity.
