    I Got a Spectrum Analyzer!

So, I am now the proud owner of a Sencore SLM1456CM spectrum analyzer. I absolutely love this unit.

I have had a very hard time putting it down to do work. I plan to take a bunch of pictures and compile information. The space on my website where I plan to put it currently just has pictures of the signals here in Charlottesville as viewed from the VHF bowtie as it sits on my CRT monitor.

I'm planning to take it with me everywhere. If I go where friends are, the analyzer will follow.

That is freakin nice.... Can't say enough, except maybe I am jealous! I would love to find someone again locally that had one. I used to have a nice comm monitor that had a spectrum mode but sold it about 8 years ago for $5 Grand, so no way I could justify just keeping it to use it a few times a year.

Did you have to surrender your first born to get it, or sacrifice an arm or hand or a leg? I am glad I can use the stations equipment, cause I don't have a spare arm or hand or a leg to offer them right now !

Does it interface with a laptop for data retention, or do screen shot downloads to a computer?

If I was rich, this is the one I would have. I saw a presentation on this unit yesterday at an SBE meeting. This one does it all, literally. It also shows the video from the signal you are analyzing. It is also a complete stand alone Linux based computer to boot ! It only costs about $17,000, and considering it is made in Germany along with the Rhode and Swartz units, as that is also where they come from, it seems like a good deal considering that the Rhode and Swartz base price is around $20,000, and it does less than the unit in the link.

Hey, Trip! Tell them what it cost you on ebay!

One word of advice: Women don't find guys with their eyes on a spectrum analyzer screen very interesting. Don't ask me how I know this..

Yes it does for both. I have the 1454 ( as slightly less featured version...) and I just started playing with the software today. Pretty neat stuff that allows you to upload saved spectrum analyzer screen shots, bar graph displays of programmed channels in the current plan, and even uploading measured data into an Excel spreadsheet for later relative comparison and examination. For example, a given field test could be made of a single antenna over every channel in the local market and within a very short period of time, you can have a spreadsheet with the relevant data. I've attached a pdf version of a spreadsheet based on a BAR log file that I had saved off my home antenna sometime between March and June (edit - Sorry, had to zip it..). A group of antennas could be tested one right after the other, each having a BAR and/or SPEC display saved, then take it back to a computer for import into a spreadsheet for comparison. You don't have to have it connected to the PC at the test site if you don't want to as the SA has internal memory and a rudimentary file system.

This software is new toy for me and I'm going to have to play with it for a few days to see what all you can do with it.

Ahem! Excuse me, i need to go find a napkin to wipe the drool off with.....

I was planning on asking my wife if Santa could bring me a Stihl MS390 (with a 20" bar) but I might aim HIGHER now that I've seen that one!

At this moment, that doesn't seem to be a problem. >_>

I didn't even realize that's what the Bar function did. I learn something new about this thing every day.

It does seem pretty nifty. I just wish I could get it to work properly inside my virtual machine.
