Default temporary turn off of analog

a friend told me that television stations are temporarily turning off their analog signals for short periods of time—10 seconds, 30 seconds—to help consumers see whether they need to take action?

what is the deal with this and who is doing it.

a lot of stations are doing this so that people will know if they need the converter box or not many don't know if their tv has a digital tuner or not.

CBS in NYC did it a couple of nights ago. They announced it in advance and told you what you'd see if you were ready for digital or if you needed to do something to become ready.
