DirecTV I believe gets fiber, so it shouldn't be affected anyway. Only OTA.
I also hear that KNBC is on KVEA 52-2 this morning.

So they moved KVEA to 4.2 and KNBC to 52.2? I guess so if one transmitter goes down the other stays up with both NBC *and* Telemundo?

Sounds like it. I'm told KVEA is actually on Mount Harvard about 0.75 miles away, but that it's also threatened by the fire, so they have a better chance of at least one surviving.

From the Variety.com website...
Quote:
fire retardant had been spread around the transmission equipment and brush had been cleared around the area -- but he expected fire to nonetheless hit the site in the near future.
"There's nothing we can do to stop that fire from going up Mt. Wilson,"

The towers are still broadcasting as of right now, though the fire is still threatening to burn them down. 14.2% of Los Angeles area has OTA, but according to this link Station Fire threatens station towers | Company Town | Los Angeles Times some stations have auxiliary towers too. Some stations are also preparing to stream their broadcasts over the internet too.

Quotes from the AP released four hours ago...
Quote:
|
Firefighters protecting Mount Wilson retreated Sunday but continued to dump flame retardant around the towers, transmitters and telescopes from the air. They said little could be done to stop the advancing flames, or predict how much damage would be done if the blaze ascends the 5,700-foot peak.
|
Quote:
John Holland, director of engineering at KABC-TV in Los Angeles, said it's possible the TV station could stay on the air even if the fire burns through the complex. The station's antenna is sturdily built, and the transmitter at its foot is housed in a concrete building. The generator that kicks in if power is cut has several days' worth of fuel.
If the fire does enough damage to shut down the antenna, the station would be off the air for at least a few hours but KABC has a backup on the way that could provide a signal to at least part of the city, Holland said.

Update from me here today. There's ash falling all over the place. It's crazy, my car was parked outside all night, went out this morning and had to turn the windshield wipers on to remove the stuff from the windshield.

That can happen at 100 miles and beyond. We can tell it's a big fire from here, 850 miles away, because the upper-air currents are just right: The sky is yellowish-white, not blue; it's hazy everywhere (which happens when it's humid in late fall to early spring, but never in late summer); and the air smells ever so faintly like a wildfire.

Exactly what part of L.A. County to you live in? Do you live in L.A. City Proper (including Culver City, West Hollywood, B.H. and Santa Monica)? Or do you live in Pasadena? The Valley? Or another part of L.A. County?

I'm pretty far north east, closer to Pasadena which is where I work too. It's just amazing how much smoke is in the air today. We were watching TV in the break room today, and the news mentioned something about the fire moving completely across Mount Wilson.
