Have Magnovox converter TB100MW9, I'm surrounded by trees, one story house, flat land, large lake between my home and transmitter towers, prior to 14 Dec 2008, received beautiful analog TV picture using outdoor antenna from the following stations, FOX (WVUE),PBS(WYES), MyN(WUPL), IND(WHNO),PBS(WLAE),ION(WPXL), about 10-20% of the time CBS(WWL), NBC(WVUE),ABC(WGNO),CW(WNOL) during the day, but if weather extremely bad(hurricane on the way, stormy w/o lightning, extremely windy, CBS,FOX,NBC fantastic w/no break in transmission, couldn't ask for a better picture. At night from about 2330 til about 0330 the only Louisiana stations come in were MyN, NBC(WVLA),CBS(WAFB),ABC(WBRZ)PBS(WLPB) and the following other stations from Mississippi and Florida--ABC(WLOX)ms,ABC(WEAR)fl,some NBC station from Jackson, MS, a FOX from MS Gulf Coast.
After 15 Dec2008 no WVUE(FOX){they completely cut their analog signal) at all, WWL(CBS) only during bad weather,WDSU(NBC) 98% of the time,WUPL(MyN)all the time,WGNO and WNOL both sometimes, I hope you get my gist this is getting long and wordy now so on to next.
Aft hook up converter aga during spring I think, rec'd KGLA(telemundo) when I would receive no other channels. WDSU(2){one is weather plus} was most frequent after KGLA, WGNO(2),WLAE(4),WPXL(4),WHNO(2),WNOL(2),WWL(1). parenthesis number of substations.
After changing in June this year I rec'd FOX(WVUE) for about 30-45 secs one day although I ck daily, never rec'd as of this date the following WUPL-MyN,WLAE-PBS,WHNO-IND,WYES-PBS,KGLA-telemundo,.

WDSU-NBC .1and.2 are my best stations followed by WGNO-ABC,WNOL-CW and WWL-CBS. On Monday 7 Sep rec'd a Dynex DX-L19-10A which was mfg July 2009. No channels would scan using indoor antenna, 2 channels only using outdoor WDSU-NBC .2 and WNOL-CW .1.
Took a chance hooked converter box to it found 4 channels:WDSU-NBC .1 and .2-signal strength strong,,WNOL-CW .1-signal weak and WGNO-ABC .1-signal weak. That night and yesterday signal fades. Today no signal whatsoever. My TV signal says weak although Monday it was strong, normal and weak. On my converter box the best signal strength I've noticed was WDSU which got up as far as 45, no pixilating of picture. Mine pixilates at 13, slow motion at about 16 and although I'm not sure but looking at the bar location I think that type box goes to 100.
Have tried turning the outdoor antenna and will try to get someone to climb up and see if they can raise it as far as it can go up the pole. I can't do anything about the huge trees around me but I would appreciate any advice I receive on antenna, converter box, line amplifier's etc. I'm not expecting to receive the faraway stations from Baton Rouge, Natchez, or Pensacola but these stations w/i 50 miles of my home would be nice. Sorry this is so long.

Update: Around about 1830hrs CT WDSU (NBC) .1 and 2 came on hovering around signal strength 13-18. Its still on at the same strength. No other station so far is coming in. It is now 2015hrs. Looking at that chart from TVFOOL if I'm reading it correctly WNOL(CW) should be my strongest station but its not.

Default Antenna System

I didn't see anything in your post about the feedline. I would suggest RG-6, or better, feedline. The coaxial feedline is crucial. I would use it at every point in the system. I have heard of folks that had cheap, lossy RG-59 for short runs, the replaced it with brand new low loss cable and they have signal.

The more info, the better. I'm not an antenna guru, but something doesn't sound right given the fact that you're using an outdoor antenna. Along with Jim1348's question of what kind of antenna cable you're using, what kind of condition is it in?

What type of outdoor antenna do you have? And the question about type of coax and it's age are needed as well.

I you were looking for an antenna without one currently a Winegard 7694P pointed at New Orleans. Use a new balun and new RG6 coax. Probably don't need an amp so I would not buy one unless you found some stations right on the edge of working.

You might have enough antenna now. Depending on what your outside antenna would be. Your signals are weak enough indoor would be marginal.

The outdoor antenna I bought new in fall of 1997, don't know the brand(it may be an RCA but its been so long so I can't be sure) but at the time Home Depot touted it as the best on the market for pulling in UHF and VHF. It reminds you of an airplane with peacock feathers at the back. From the ground it looks as though all the tines are still there. Because of all the trees around me I later bought RCA TV/VCR Distribution Amp Model VH121--VHF/UHF/FM. Thats the only way I received beautiful non-snowy pictures. Antenna connected to exist coax cable in attic which dates back to 1972, when house was built. Do you think possibly I could try to get by first by replacing my coax cable? Is RG6 coax thin round or thick round? What is a balun? Jim1348, Aaron62 and Piggie thank you for this info. I will buy the coax first and try that, then if I get the same result buy the Winegard you suggested if its affordable I hope. The Magnovox converter I have should I stick with it or find another brand? At present I'm still only receiving WDSU (NBC) .1 and .2{weatherplus} signal strength max 18. I will get back with you on how I fare. Thx in advance
