Default VCR clock is always wrong with broadcast DTV

I'm in the Phoenix metro area, and have a VCR that automatically sets its time from (I presume) the television broadcast signal. It always worked fine under the old analog system, and when digital TV came along, it worked fine for a few weeks. Then it mysteriously set itself to exactly three hours ahead- presumably from an East coast signal. After a couple of weeks, it set itself back to the correct local time. Shortly after that, it went back to being exactly three hours ahead and has stayed there for weeks.

Any idea why this happens, and if there's anything I can do about it? I presume "throw out a junker of a VCR" would be the solution but for the fact that any other appliance that auto-sets its time would probably still lead to me being three hours early no matter where I go.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Do you use a converter box to connect into and then output to your VCR or do you have a HDTV?

It goes from big honkin' antenna in the attic (original to the house, which was built in 1995) to the wall jack to the DTV converter to the VCR to the TV- which was made in 1997, so it's certainly nothing like an HDTV.

Really- we just have a 14" TV to watch some broadcast stuff. Between the PS2 and the desktops and laptops we have something like 6 DVD players, so I'd rather not buy any new hardware. Maybe I should just throw out the VCR.

Well, I don't think your VCR is getting its timer information from the channels. "Think".

Reason why I say that is, your VCR is not using its own tuner, it's using the dtv converter's tuner. Now, if your converter box is set to change channels at different times so your VCR can automatically turn on, then it sounds like your converter box timer which might be received from one of the local channels. Are you using a dish network dtv pal plus converter box?

No; we just have broadcast- just an antique antenna, some coax, and a converter box. It's always *exactly* three hours ahead- as if getting the feed from another time zone. Not 3:02 or whatever, but 3 hours precisely.

Which converter box are you using? Does it ask you to set which time zone you are in? One my converter requests time zone location during initial set up and the other does not....
