Default Greater program choice after the DTV transition

As the June 12, 2009 DTV transition date approaches broadcasters are looking to broaden their program offerings. While the current OTA program choices appear to be narrow. Quality program expansion will occur as advertising revenues grow. We will see lower budget programs replaced with high quality programming. June 12, 2009 is the beginning of an exciting and ever changing future of DTV.

Subchannels Need Programming, Offer Ad Opportunities

Quote:
Broadcasters don’t have to search far and wide for programming because digital programmers are eager to pitch their fare to stations, said Thom Postema, general manager for Southeastern Media Holdings’ Fox affiliate WSFX-TV in Wilmington, N.C. “They come to you. We’ve been pitched on real estate channels, NASCAR channels, economy channels,” he said.
Quote:
The business model for digital subchannels is unproven, but that’s because the business is new, said Del Parks, VP of engineering and operations for the Sinclair Broadcast Group, which carries MyNetworkTV and THIS TV in a few markets.

MyNetworkTV and THIS TV are very promising and much better than the typical alternative sub channels, (here in AZ, one of our broadcast station subchannel's runs weather 24/7, and another runs the same news cast recorded earlier in the day).

More over-the-air channels and programming means more competition for large broadcast networks and cable companies. That's a good thing...

However, I think what we're going to find is that there is an inherent conflict between the expectations for compensation from content owners, the expectations for profit from investors, and the expectations for programming from viewers. The big four networks are barely able to smooth out those conflicts; it surely remains to be seen whether sub-channels can. This TV and such are trying hard, now, but I suspect that their ability to secure programming on an on-going basis will be limited by their limited resources. I bet that we'll see an unmatched amount of repetition of programming for over-the-air broadcasting; vast amounts of the broadcast day devoted to home shopping or infomercials; etc.

Personally, what I would really like to see sub-channels used for is delayed broadcast of the main channel's programming. I would love to see every channel rebroadcast its main programming, in 480i widescreen, on a sub-channel, say three hours later. However, such an offering would mostly be aimed at DVRs, and so not a major money-maker. Maybe make it a 24 hour delay for most programming, except have the news slots just delayed from one slot to the next, i.e., show the morning news at noon, the noon news at 6PM, the 6PM news at 11PM, and so on. (Unfortunately, the slots aren't all the same size.)

I'll put my vote in for an old British TV shows subchannel. Heck, who would need BBC if they ran Blackadder, Monty Python, and Doctor Who back to back everyday.

THIS TV is nice. The nearest affiliate with an RTN sub-channel is in Rhode Island and their signal doesn't reach out to me. Our CW also had an actual music video/concert channel in 2007 but it was shut down for legal reasons.

OTA might make a comeback but I bet reception problems will also steer some people towards basic cable as well.
