Default Minnesota newscast ratings are suffering after the Digital Transition

David Brauer from online newspaper, Minnpost.com, claims to have access (from a local affiliate executive) to ratings for morning, weekend, 5 p.m., and 10 p.m. newscasts.

The 6 a.m. newscast stats were the most shocking with one broadcaster showing a 40% drop in viewership. The 10 p.m. time slot also showed a sweeping drop for all four broadcasters. The afternoon and weekend broadcast times showed mixed results.

There are many different scenarios that could be playing out with the attached ratings numbers.

1. Have some viewers not prepared for digital television signals?
2. Are viewers having problems with digital signal reception?
3. How accurate is David Brauer's source?

Whatever the case, it's tough to draw any conclusion at this time.

Quote:
The statistics below represent total viewing households; no demographic breakouts. Though I don't have actual ratings figures, stations are listed by their rankings in the time slot:

6 a.m. Monday-Friday
1. KARE (Ch. 11), up 13 percent
2. KMSP (Ch. 9), down 15 percent
3. KSTP (Ch. 5), down 40 percent
4. WCCO (Ch. 4), down 11 percent
Quote:
5 p.m. Monday-Friday
1. KARE, up 13 percent
2. WCCO, up 43 percent
3. KSTP, up 13 percent
4. Fox9, down 25 percent
Quote:
6 p.m. Monday-Friday
1. KARE, up 10 percent
2. WCCO, up 14 percent
3. KSTP, down 14 percent
Quote:
10 p.m. Monday-Friday
1. KARE, down 7 percent
2. WCCO, up 11 percent
3. KSTP, down 14 percent
4. Fox9, down 14 percent

I'm not sure I could attribute the drop in viewership to the DTV transition. I don't believe there are that many viewers left behind by the DTV transition. Near 50% of the country has been disenfranchised since the new Administration has taken over earlier this year and the news stories have been so one sided irrespectful of the happenings. Now you throw into the mix, the June 12, 2009 date. Up until the time around June, the Country has been experiencing wetter than normal weather until the time around the transition. I know I for one, am tired of hearing the BS and exaggerations about the King and his great success. We all know what the news is going to spread on a daily/nightly basis. I have turned off the news, and I am taking the opportunity to get out, now that the weather has gotten better. I wonder how many more around the country have gotten fed up with the news reporting and done the same thing as I have?

These ratings could mean anything. Like 1inxs kind of said, people may just be reading or watching more news on the internet. Who wants to sit and watch how bad crime is everynight in our cities? That's basically what local news has become.

Summer is always slow, and those numbers don't even reflect homes not ready. Nor is there a pattern per station. The Fox numbers are down, so maybe there is better news? It's the only station I see down in all time slots.

It doesn't follow who switched to VHF either. The only thing I can think about besides Summer is rural people are watching less OTA TV. I am hearing it locally. Yeah, I get the stations sometimes, then before the show is over it's gone. Doesn't take much of that before human nature even with any anger toward a new $100-250 antenna system find other things to do. Some get mad, some just walk away and remain occupied with other things.

I believe there might be a new "Hidden Transition" where rural people that don't have cable either, don't want a satellite are just finding there is life beyond the couch. If this is true, some of it might be solved over time if synchronized translators can be made to really work. It could also lead to a further divide between the rural America and Urban, much of which was behind Shay's Rebellion and the Civil War. But this time, the rural people won't revolt, just become isolated from some of the county. It also won't effect enough rural viewers to have any impact overall in a lot of places or it might?

That all said, I more believe it's just the news like cr@p to put on the air.

"Kick them when their up, kick them when their down"
"We love dirty laundry". Tom Henley.

Now since this thread was hijacked to begin with, if I remember right, for about 2 years after 9/11 the then King could do no wrong either. Tit for tat, skit for skat. Just something to put on the air. Because there was little real information about the premise for war in Iraq, and there was little premise for the consequences of stimulus packages. Tit for tat, kit for kat.

There isn't any real news. There are so many people and the number is growing more than in a long time that are sick of it. They are sick of the news just entertaining the public, while Congress after Congress, President after President bows to the corporations profits, selling what is left of the United States to the highest bidder.

This is why despite the Republican party's membership shrinking, the Democratic Party isn't growing. Now it's time for some Democratic voters to get some spine and realize their party is as bad (in some different ways) as the one that was replaced, despite them begging for a bone during the elections.

How can 6 am news be down and 6 pm be up in ratings? I have a hypothesis to throw into the mix too. How's the unemployment rate in Minnesota? If it's close to 10% like the rest of the nation, are people waking up later in the morning and missing the 6:00AM news? Those numbers from minnpost.com are more gossip than anything.
