Default FCC to conduct "a more thorough examination" of reception issues

Broadcast and Cable is reporting that the FCC is likely to send out engineers to do "a more thorough examination" of digital signal reception issues in top market areas.

New York and Chicago were among the specific markets mentioned in the article.

Quote:
In a number of big city markets, stations moving from temporary UHF DTV channel assignments to permanent VHF channels were having trouble reaching some downtown viewers.
Quote:
There are certainly exponentially more devices operating in the RF environment than when the FCC began planning for the DTV switch almost two decades ago. But engineers note that the overall noise environment should actually be lower than before the switch since high-powered stations are no longer broadcasting two signals.
Commentary: The low power assumptions that were originally made with some of the VHF broadcast stations were obviously miscalculated. All full-power stations have shut off analog signals including the remaining nightlight stations (The FCC has unexpectedly removed the list of nightlighters. If anyone has a copy, please PM me).

If the overall noise environment has decreased as engineers have suggested, then why are VHF reception issues prevalent in top market/non fringe areas?

Wish they would come to Gainesville. WNBW needs a grant to increase power, or repair it's translator.

Falcon_77 or Trip probably saved a copies, as I remember many generations. But I have one here but it's too big to upload. Had to email it to you.

----

The over all noise level has not changed. Again they are out of touch. Maybe in town the biggest problem is noise I don't have here, but the noise in rural areas is the same as it was.

This crap about too low of power gets under my skin because I don't have a reliable NBC and should. I live INSIDE the contour of one that runs 470 Watts ERP , Not KiloWatts, but watts.... Ch9

I live right right right at the grade B contour of another one on Ch 13 that I am just plain too far away. They already raised power to 53.3 KW so I doubt there is any help unless we both raise our antennas.

VHF in is great in the mountains and hills where there is little tropo, but in flat Florida with the best tropo openings next to LA/TX coast they were freaking crazy. Now they just added a Ch 10 in Orlando to add to my noise level in that frequency, as if Tampa were not bad enough alone trying to watch Jacksonville FL.

I submit when they say they didn't know it, it was a LIE and they are now doing cover their bottom work. They wanted to sell off those channels to wireless carriers.

Heck some of the banks got more money than they made by selling off our UHF channels forever. We can't get them back, unlike a bank actually being able to pay back the money.

Ok, oops, you got me started.

Not here in the Ozarks. UHF runs circles around it, hands down.

YES. UHF works much better than VHF here, even with hills in the way. YMMV.

It depends on so many things. Location, power, directional antenna of the transmitter. Location of the receiving antenna. Total blockage vs knife edge reception of a hill.

But all in all and I have said many times, we would have been better to dump 2-13 and keep even just 52-59. Even those that say 6 is usable, the 8 channels could have totally replaced then channels 6-13. Been done with VHF, one antenna. Less noise. Able to reuse channels closer together.

I wasn't defending VHF, just the only people I find happy with it live in mountainous regions.

YMMV really is the theme of dtv reception.
