Richard Heene deserves to get the book thrown at him for filing a false police report, and he absolutely should be tagged for the thousands it cost law-enforcement and rescue agencies to look for the kid. But this national outcry that Richard should be thrown into prison for years? Beyond absurd. Falcon was at home and unhurt. This is a pursuit of raw vengeance by people who don't have all the facts in the case and who don't know the Heene family -- but think they do.

99.9% of the fault for the balloon fiasco rests on the media, itself. The media thrives on sensationalism, so blows such situations out of proportion, both in the telling, and then in the recriminations. There was nothing about this story that warranted 90% of the coverage it garnered in the first place, and if the media would actually stop covering such unimportant triviality, then people would be less likely to try to goof on the media, to get notoriety.
