With the number of changes that have taken place since Law and Order first started, I'm really surprised at its staying power. Goes to show that good storylines can carry a show for a long time despite the change in actors and actresses.
Aye, it kinda sucks when actors come and go, but the Law and Order series has stood strong and every one of them is a genuine article of American Television. I'm surprised how much story they can fit in a single hour. I watched it every chance I got when I still had cable.
Law and Order has the best storybooks in my opinion. That is what makes this series so fantastic.
And of course the "reality" of the serie. I remember one of the investigators telling his partner that he will soon retire. A few episodes later this partnership ends because the old investigator retires.
I've actually pretty much given up on it. Don't really like the latest cast. And it's just gotten tired. I watched for years. Every different show. Will still watch SVU on occasion.

It's too violent and gritty for me, so I don't watch it. That said, sometimes the changes in casting can continue to revitalize a show and bring new life to it. That's what happened with MASH. The cast changes ended up being the best thing that continued to happen to it.
I used to watch law and order all the time, some of the storylines are based on real cases, just changed some for TV. I got bored with the show, well mainly cop/law dramas in general. Same thing with CSI
