Default When is Star Wars coming to Blu-Ray?

This is a call to George Lucas and company. Bring the original Star Wars Trilogy (IV-VI) to Blu-Ray!

It makes my blood boil at the thought that I can purchase, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days on Blu-Ray before Star Wars. Actually, it's embarrasing that one of the greatest, scratch that, THE great trilogy of all time does not have a scheduled release date.

So when is it coming? PC World contacted Lucas Ltd and asked this very question, to which they received the following response,

Quote:
"Lucasfilm Ltd. has no plans to release any of the Star Wars movies on Blu-ray or HD DVD. Listings on Amazon.com or any other Web site are purely speculative and erroneous."
AAaaarrrrrrgggghhhhhhhhh... Why?

One of the top search results on Google brings up a hilarious post at another forum,

Quote:
Hey: I am a visitor to supershadow.com. Lucas personally answers fanmail every few days there. I have read on this site that Star Wars films (at this time, anyway) will not be released on blu until 2015. The reason being is that there are not currently enough households with blu to maximise profits. If you recall, Revenge of the Sith was never released on videocassette for roughly the same reason.
Seriously, some final thoughts on the matter. Ok, lets call it more of a request.
  1. Please leave the original series alone, no "extra material" and absolutely no CGI!
  2. 1080p - Nothing less
  3. I want the OG Jabba too, just in case you missed item number 1
  4. Release one version and charge what you must, but package it with all the feature rich goodness we had to wait for back in 2004 when the trilogy came out on DVD
  5. Bring it out no later than 2010! I don't care about episodes I, II, and III!

I hate to open old wounds, but when will we see Blu-Ray fizzle. Those supporting Blu-Ray would like the opposition to Blu-Ray to just give up, so they can have all the movies in Blu-Ray. I for one wouldn't even consider trading my HD DVD for a Blu-Ray and will never purchase a Blu-Ray disc I'm sure I'm not alone in this opinion. The comparisons of the HD DVD and Blu-Ray showed the possibility's of HD DVD superior to Blu-Ray. The only way Blu-Ray was able to end the DVD war and come out on top was to buy out the rights to HD DVD and immediately pull it from the market. Currently Blu-Ray is making changes to their products in attempts to match the quality and versatility of HD DVD. At the time the DVD wars were ended there were other electronic manufacturers R&D teams working on a promising alternative to Blu-Ray. The quality is equal to HD DVD and the manufacturing costs are lower than Blu-Ray. It will also upconvert a consumers current DVD collection to a standard acceptable to the consumer, which will allow old DVDs kept and used in ones collection. Blu-Ray has yet to capture the heart or market share of the consumer. I believe George Lucas is one of many who think there is going to be a better option for the consumer. The genius that he is will wait for the release before moving forward. If Blu-Ray has captured the hearts and budgets of the consumers and Hollywood why are the movie choices so limited? Maybe they're waiting for the alternative as well? I wouldn't hold my breath for Star Wars on Blu-Ray. HTNut, You're invited to come watch Star Wars in my HT room on my HD DVD player upconverted to 1080i. This is just my humble opinion. Just to show the debate is not dead I have included links to other options currently in the works.

I guess I should have added the HD-DVD format in my request as well. The main point I was trying to make was that George Lucas has denied one of my favorite movies of all time from being released on a HD format DVD, for whatever reason.

George lucas is slow to put out the saga on newer formats. One thing that has been rattling my mind.........How is he gonna convince all star wars fans to buy yet AGAIN another version of the films? Theres like 6 different versions, of VHS tapes, DVD's, etc.

I have the original 1981 VHS media pictures empire strikes back tape with the case. Bought it at a thift store for a quarter

I like this version the best because it's the ORIGINAL version without all the crappy enhancements they did in 1997.

haha Thanks!

I wish George Lucas would give some more insight than the somewhat blanket response that was given to PCWorld.

lol, this is all news to me. Wonder if the time period of when it was produced has any effect on digitizing - scanning the film to 1080p.

Really? Are you being serious here or sarcastic? If your being serious did you also decide back in the day to NEVER trade in your VHS for that silly DVD fad? Or were you in support of Laserdiscs?

He has a HD-DVD player dude. Take it easy. Besides, you probably found this post searching for when Star Wars is coming to blu-ray and sadly enough, it isn't yet. lol. So us regular DVD watchers have another leg up on the blu-ray folks.
