HD-DVD Format is holding up against Blu-Ray...STILL
A new poll from Harris Interactive shows that only 7% of the people out of the survey have a Blu-Ray player compared to 11% who own a HD-DVD player. What tips the scales slightly in favor of Blue-Ray is that more households own a Sony PS3 w/ Blu-Ray than XBOX360 w/ HD-DVD player. Which gives the following totals for each DVD format:
16 percent households with Blu-Ray
14 percent with HD-DVD.
I'm surprised. How about you??

Die Blu-Ray die. Any company that resorts to purchasing their competition and then discontinuing the product is no friend HD media. HD DVD or Bust for me. I am one of many that will wait out until the next HD format comes to the market. Some of you will disagree, but it won't be long before the next generation is released.

LOL, like the flame. What is going to be the next generation? I don't think there's going to be anything for another 10 years at least. Unless people start using thumb drive type devices for movies.

Sorta like a PC Engine HuCard or something...
A lot better than thumb drives, as more contacts = faster seek response time.
Good for us consumers, but bad for studios. Yes, they can be Java-encoded against copying, but they won't suffer scratches or other incidental damage which would encourage buying replacement discs.

As soon as HD was off the table, the price skyrocketed as before it was starting to come down to the point I considered an HD DVD player. Now never mind. Buy the letter box version and run it progressive scan. not too bad a picture. then again I am not as picky as some.
Sony has been upset since the day they lost the U-Matic war with their consumer Beta to VHS. I think this was their way of seeking revenge.
Some say I need to "Pony Up" and pay DirecTV for HD, and buy a Blue Ray.
I say real men need to start getting sick of corporations totally controlling even what we should see as cool and "pony up" and not buy the manure.
Yes a Rebel Piglet I have been forever...

Say what you want of Sony but technically speaking, Blu-ray is superior to any physical disk media today. The main reason Blu-ray is better than HD DVD is because it can hold more data. A single layer Blu-ray disk can hold 25GB's while a single layer HD DVD holds 15GB's. The more data the disk can hold the higher the quality the movie and sound can be.

No!! Go Blu-Ray Go!
Whose product did they discontinue? Here's some interesting info about their trojan horse / music "scandal" if you've never seen it.

Well then you know what Mitch said "Ride Sally Ride"
I will went I can buy close out models at under $50....
I need to spend more time learning this stuff like Netflix and others movies on demand. Even with my slow 3m DSL I could download a movie a week at night and watch it. Must easier than going to the rental store when you live 45 miles away. Or even bothering to mail them back.
I am starting to under stand that an eclectic variety of video sources might be much better than a single provider like cable or sat.
I still wish I could buy a 10 or 20 channel ala carte package. 95% of the channels I don't ever watch.

Production of consumer HD-DVD players and HD-DVD movies were scrapped due to weak sales against Blu-Ray. It wasn't given very much time, esprecially in this economy.

I know, but they never purchased the HD-DVD format from Toshiba.

Honestly, it's very difficult to distinguish a difference between an upconverted DVD and 1080P on my 40" Mitsubish LCD. Noticable at times, but nothing to really celebrate over. In fact, I get a bit of graineyness during some dark scenes that I've been meaning to research. I bought another HDMI cord to replace the one that came with my Sony Blu-Ray but haven't gotten around to swapping it out yet.
