How about the expired certificate warning? i found no solution to that, and no option in Firefox. i just fell back to IE 6, back when it was still stable and not annoying and gave more options to turn things off. i really despise nagware.

You can set in your update options, at least in XP, to not notify, notify, download but not install or totally automatic.

I choose only notify in all my XP boxes. This way if I don't want the path or upgrade, I uncheck the box, then it asks do you not want to see this update again? I check yes.

It is automatic by default but can be turned off as above.

First I hate myriads of updates myself, so I am not an update fan boy.

But IE and Windows more often than not will delay a critical threat update until Update Tuesdays, once a month, while the threat is known to be very high. Sometimes yes, they have mid month updates but not often. They had one this month.

So the complaint against IE was you can go 3 weeks exposed, though the threat is defined at the MS web site, it's all over the internet, it's real, not some maybe I get it type attack, but you wait three weeks.

So Fx fixes threat ASAP. That can mean sometime there is an update a day for a few days, or one a week, etc. They update NOW, not when it's update time but right now, as soon as the patch is done and tested.

This alone is a HUGE part of why Firefox is safe browsing than IE.

If you are in the middle of something just hit later.

===============

Speaking of updates, they made getting past expired or otherwise security certificates much easier sometime in the 3.5.x updates.

I am currently on 3.5.2 in Firefox. If I go to an out of date certificate here is the new procedure.

If you click:

Technical Details, you see the certificate if you know how to read one (sorta like TVFool)

I Understand the Risks, it takes you to the site

But the box "Add Exception" permanently ignores the status the certificate for that URL, specially, not sub domains, or the with or without www versions.

So if it's a site you know well, or maybe it's your own site you put up a self signed certificate you just "Add Exception" and that is the last you see of it.

Problem solved (at least for me).

Safari doesn't nag me and it runs off the same Mozilla based platform as Firefox iirc.

Windows' wife-style notifications have been permenantly shut off at my end. cannot stand those speech balloon annoyances. if i want an update i'll go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com myself.

About 90% of what slows XP down is the 'features.' it's even worse on Vista. strip it down you got a nice version almost as great as Win98SE.

Funny how opinions differ. Of all the Win98 versions I liked the original best and have an old 450 MHz machine running it still that acts as a file server. Every time I tried SE on anything it crashed constantly.

Incorrect "expired certificate" warnings often indicate either your computer's set to the wrong date or you have a bad firefox extension (add-on) causing the problem. Assuming your clock/date are correct, start Firefox in safe mode to see if the certificate problem still exists. If it goes away, restart Firefox in normal mode and disable all your add-ons. Then, re-enable them one at a time, to find the offender.

I'm happy with Safari and IE6 thank you. i only use IE whenever something doesn't quite agree with Safari (very rare).

My Acer Aspire One is very happy with the stripped-down XP and the Safari browser. i'll get a screen shot soon it's very simple. it has a full-desktop version of XP Home but i stripped it down and made it appear to mimic (very nicely mind you) the OS X Mac platform. there's no desktop icons and the computer runs faster. netbooks don't do very well on a full-blown fully naggy XP system.
