ESPN is very expensive programming. They make more money keeping that stuff exclusive. Remember the point I made about OTA programming being inexpensive programming. I do foresee a time, though, when ABC's O&O's run some sort of ESPN lite (maybe ESPN classic) on a sub-channel.

Not in HD. That's $2.99.

If you're paying $1.99 SD/$2.99 HD, then I'd hope it wouldn't have commercials.

So simple math: $1.99 SD/$2.99 HD minus how much a commercial-laden broadcast gets from commercials equals the amount that needs to be paid some other way.

I have to jump here and say this calling someone a "Cable Company sucker", even if you felt provoked, rightfully or not, does nothing to advance the topic.

In other words next time I see something I think is personal I will just edit it out of the post. No hard feelings, I love a lot of your posts. But even if you didn't mean it personal it looks like it to me.

It *would* be nice if the site would allow me to put him on ignore, but when I've tried, it says I'm "not allowed" to put him on ignore....

You know, I've never tried to put anyone on ignore here. I don't even see the option, but it is part of many websites. It would be a good options here as well.

ESPN classic sucks. Who wants to watch old sporting events? Also ESPN is not expensive it's already paid for. The already got their money from cable and satellite. Adding OTA adds potentially 15 million viewers which means ESPN can charge higher ad rates. Besides ESPN was just ONE example plenty of cheaper cable channels that could be added to OTA. Do you have some excuse as to why ABC Family couldn't be a subchannel to ABC stations?

Who cares if it's HD or not? Who says you HAVE to have it in HD? I have Charter cable and 80% of their channels are SD only. So if you insist on comparing apples with apples then why isn't using the SD version applicable since I can only see the SD version on cable? And even on somethign like Dish or DirecTv where nealry all the channels have a HD version, it's $10 extra per month which needs to be taken into consideration in your cost analysis.

Once again using YOUR numbers of only watching 3 hours of TV a week that 12 hours a month even at $2.99 that's $36 a month less than half of what my cable bill is. Of course anything on OTA or Hulu etc you don't even have to pay for, so the $2.99 is only for shows not avaailable on either. Not to mention that Amazon also has many shows on sale for cheaper. For example the Mentalist season one in HD right now is only $2.39 per episode. Also if you use the "season pass" option new shows are only $2.84 in HD. It's only in SD but a couple of months back I got season 5 of Top Chef for $5 on sale. Now since Charter doesn't have Bravo in SD I'm not seeing it any different than I would on cable. Not even counting the re-union( which I don't care about ) show 14 episodes for $5 is 36 cents per episode. Now you can't beat that.

That's commensurate with the idea of giving it away for free.

They have to pay for it every day.

Making it available via an OTA sub-channel will degrade their ability to demand the $3 per subscriber per month subscription fee they demand from cable and satellite companies now.... the highest of any non-premium channel.

If that was better, they'd do it. They're in it for the money.

As a cable/satellite exclusive, Disney gets 30c per subscriber for ABC Family. They'll get a lot less if the deal is no longer exclusive to subscription television, and if they give it away for free OTA.

Many people care. Their concerns are as valid as yours.

Why, then, did you complain about my referring to a channel that many cable and satellite systems still provide only in SD: ESPN Classic?

Comcast doesn't charge extra for HD, and provides the channels you wanted to talk about, ESPN and ABC Family, in HD.

I think you made a serious error in your math.

But we're getting off the topic: Please say clearly what point you're attempting to make. Thanks.
