Default Thinking of Buying an Older HDTV

I'm considering buying an older HDTV (Samsung Model number: HLN437W1X/XAA
Serial number: 38553CFX400465F) for $250 that apparently doesn't have a tuner. I don't have cable or dish so will need to buy a receiver, etc.

Overall, the deal seems like a good value at that price based on what I've read about this TV, but the reviews were all from 2004/2005 from when the TV was new. Back then it cost several thousand dollars.

Any opinions? Is this a good deal?

Thanks for any input

Let me state up front, that Im not a fan of Rear Projection Televisions. This is a bit smallish one as well at 43 inches. DLP is a big plus. Samsungs DLP rear projections became leaders in the rear projection market in the ensuing years. The earlier models still suffered from off axis dimming. The lamps on these style devices (not just Samsung) are also notorious for getting real hot and burning out prematurely. Although I just googled and replacement lamps are only $129. The color wheels on those style devices are also known to be problematic.

I would steer clear of it.

I think you would do better with a current 42" Plasma from Panasonic for $700. Or a LCD if you prefer, for similar money.

IMO, the older HDTV CRT Direct Views are worth buying, Sony(especially), Panasonic, Toshiba...(not Samsung). And not older than 2 or 3 years LCDs, Plasmas, or DLP/LCD Projectors. The prices have come way down on all of these things as well. So that price from 2004 is meaningless.

My 2 cents.

I do think that that last couple of years the Samsung's rear projection DLPs looked great and solved a lot of the of axis dimming problems, were nice and bright, and now have low heat producing LED illumination! Sony and JVC deserve a mention for their LCD rear projections as well. Perhaps Mitsubishi, too.

But that was in teh last few years.

I wouldn't touch it. You still need a tuner and if you want to watch HD on your HDTV it has to be a HD tuner not those tuners you can use the government coupon on. I don't know of many places that even sell HD tuners anymore. The ones that do are in excess of $100. You add the cost of the TV the tuner the possible lamp replacement and right there you might as well get a brand new TV of the same size.
