Default USA Today: "Switch to DTV went remarkably well"

Score a couple of points for the transition being a success, USA Today has a brief summary on it a few days after June 12. Now that I think about it, it's hard to believe that so many people actually prepared for this, even with the delay. There are a ton of TVs out there, are they all ready for DTV?

Quote:
The switch to digital TV, or DTV, on Friday went off without any major hitches, the Federal Communications Commission reported.

More than 900 full-power TV stations shut down their analog signals on Friday. Going forward, they will broadcast exclusively digital signals.
Quote:
While no meltdowns were reported, pockets of problems did crop up.

In cities with stations switching from UHF to VHF frequencies, the FCC noted, reception issues were fairly common.

Rescan and hope! That should have been the tagline for UHF-to-VHF stations and their PSA's.

Why didn't those stations changing bands inform their viewers? Based on reports from around the country on AVS they didn't bother. To me it's akin to them calling it the digital transition deadline not the last day of analog. It lead so many people to think that digital would not start until June 12th. I know several people that had converter boxes and ATSC ready TV's that didn't even try to set up for digital believing they had to wait till the date so the stations could turn on their digital transmitters.

It's all moot now. Why I was so in favor in keeping the Feb 17th date. I still don't believe 4 months more of analog helped much at all except 4 months of delay.

There is still a lot of work to be done at stations. Paying staff to maintain analog side and the electric company delayed changes stations planned post transition by 6 months to a year.

But that is my opinion. But it is shared by most of the TV engineering staffs around the country. Not the NAB or the FCC but the boys and girls in the trenches.

Actually ONE station ran a PSA here informing viewers that it was moving to UHF.

'Fox 7 wants to remind you that after the transition on June 12th, some of our viewers may lose reception as we transition from a VHF to a UHF Frequency. The following counties [counties scroll] may not be able to receive reception on digital Channel 28. a UHF/VHF combo antenna may help..."

ABC/RTN didn't say a thing and it was the only channel other than Fox which moved. it moved to a VHF channel 7, which caused tons of reception issues since analog 7 (FOX analog) wasn't going away till after midnight, while WEHT (ABC 25) changed early. but the others are in their original allocations.

And though it's over 60+ miles away, i got a new channel carrying the CW (hallelujah) when they turned up their digital transmitter to 22,000KW ERP (TVfool) post-transition.

I guess their idea of Remarkably Well means "No riots in the streets and suicide bombings at the TV stations.", a lot of people are having issues with the converter boxes, so to say it went remarkably well is a bit of a stretch.

Remarkably well seeing as the same fears and 'the apocalypse' predictions didn't happen. a repeat of Y2K, 6/6/06, swine flu, conficker, and other scares.

It's remarkable that USA Today had that article ready and posted, post transition, and not even more than a few days had gone by.
