OTA standard is 13 years old this year. It took 13 years to transition. In major markets there were digital transmitters back to 2001, but yet few TVs and only very expensive converter boxes until a year ago when the CECBs were introduced.
The
OTA transition had little to do with cable as you say you mostly watch cable.
SD programming is around now, and new shows are still being made in SD. Resolution had nothing to do with the transition on
OTA to digital.
Hence really three separate issues. But I too think it will be years before all new shows are in
HD. I don't think there is a big enough demand for the low budget shows to upgrade. Heck even a lot of the network shows are SD, which boggles my mind. CBS News Up To the Minute is still SD and that set could easily be moved to their
HD studio. That set is just a table. ABC News this Morning is the same. Why has CBS left Craig Ferguson in SD? The list goes on and on....
