It really will depend, not only once which service provider you subscribe to, but where you are. However, along with that we need to be sure we know what you're talking about when you say "basic cable". The term "basic cable" is often misunderstood. A lot of people think that the most well-known cable networks, like CNN and Disney and USA are part of it, but that's not the case. "Basic cable" means, essentially, just the local broadcast channels for your local area, and local public access (governmental/school) channels. Is that what you meant by "basic cable"?

I have Cox. I wouldn't mind an HD DVR but it really doesn't matter to me. Our TV is a plasma.

The three digital DVR options I talk about are:
1) Rent an HD DVR from Cox;
2) Buy a TiVo HD DVR (about $700 including lifetime service);
3) Buy a Moxi HD DVR (about $800) (no antenna support).
There were some earlier HD DVRs, but they only had one tuner, and/or are no longer in production.

I don't recommend getting a DVR that is not digital, because you have some services for which it is possible that sometime soon Cox could switch to digital only. (Comcast is doing that in my area on October 20.) However, it is possible to mate some other DVRs, such as the TiVo S2, with cable boxes provided by Cox, though it is somewhat complicated to set up.
