Can my TV pick up local stations in HD through my cable DVR set top box? I'm kind of confused how it all works together. Or does my QAM tuner not even matter because I have a DVR STB? Probably a dumb question, but I'm just trying to figure everything out, so take it easy on the new guy.
If you're using a converter box then indeed your television's tuner is not relevant. You could split the signal between your DVR and your television, and make use of the tuner in your television as well, but not on playback from you DVR.

I guess that's true because the DVR has its own tuner. My deal is that I want to watch some HD channels but the tuner in my DVR is only SD. So I'd have to get a splitter for that I guess.
Indeed, since your DVR will only tune in and record SD, then playback will be solely SD. If you want to watch HD with your set-up, you'll need to apply the splitter approach I mentioned earlier, and watch the HD programming live rather than recording it.
