Default cable card vs. dta vs. set top box with Cable TV

What's the difference between all three? I know that the set top box gets pretty much everything depending on which cable service you get, but I just recently started hearing about DTAs.

CableCARD is a plug-in card approximately the size of a credit card that allows consumers in the United States to view and record digital cable television channels on digital video recorders, personal computers and televisions without the use of other equipment such as a set top box (STB) provided by a cable television company.

A digital television adapter (DTA), or digital-to-analog converter [box], or commonly known as a converter box, is a device that receives a digital television (DTV) transmission, and converts that signal into an analog television signal that can be received and displayed on an analog television set.

A set-top box (STB) or set-top unit (STU) is a device that connects to a television and an external source of signal, turning the signal into content which is then displayed on the television screen.

In addition to all that, generally, CableCARD and STBs delivery the same exact linear services. Non-linear services, such as Video On Demand and Pay Per View, are generally only available through STBs.

I'm not sure how much I really want Video on Demand or Pay Per View. Anyone know what's the cheapest one to get? So basically all of them get the same normal channels or as you referred to as linear?
