Default 1080P is a waste of money

So says this Gizmodo article titled "Guess What? Many Of You Wasted Money on Your 1080p TV (But There's Hope)"

Quote:
You will notice that we didn't go into detail about those of you who responded to the 720p portion of the test, and that's because, by and large, you are watching at about the right distance. 720p TVs can be set out farther than 1080p, yet because they're cheaper, they finds their way into smaller living rooms. Because of the interplay of these two factors, 720p sets are all the more likely to be set up at an optimal viewing distance.

But 1080p, considered better, winds up in larger living rooms, but not always at larger sizes. The joke is, by keeping it as far off as we noted above, you are not much better off with that fancy 1080p set than you would have been, saving some cash and going with 720p.
Gizmodo - Guess What? Many Of You Wasted Money on Your 1080p TV (But There's Hope) - Lechner chart

I notice a huge difference between 1080p and 720p in stores when comparing TVs side by side so I'm not sure where they're coming from.

For those of us with HD DVD players we didn't waste our money. If the only input you watch is OTA and you have no intention on ever buying a HD DVD player you may want to think twice before spending the extra money.

Because they suck at setting them up, and they make them look worse than they actually are so that they can sell the 1080p models a lot better.

They think people don't notice, but they do. There was a huge row at my local walmart when the manager of that store got wind of the scam, he's a stickler for not ripping off the customer.

That's true, but honestly, last time I checked, there's very little price difference between new TVs and 1080i/1080p output.

You can purchase a nice 32 to 42 inch 60 hz 720P/1080i for $500.00 or less. You would probably spend a minimum of $300.00 more for a 60 hz 1080P HDTV even at the bargains available today.

The big issue with 1080P sets (or 1080i) is that SD reception, sadly which takes up most of OTA viewing on a few channels, sucks!!! they cannot downconvert to a quality picture and are optimized for 1080 whatever resolution. when OTA/cable/satellite goes ALL HD, then yea, it will work. but now it's a choice in perfect picture or terrible one.

To see the difference in resolution, and why new HD sets are optimized to only work well with the higher res pictures, try setting your computer's monitor display to something like 640x480 256 colors and you'll see why newer computer monitors (and HD sets) look so horrible in SD reception, as it would be the same issue with your monitor on your PC (or Mac)
