There isn't much of a choice,as they're mostly all eminateing frm China.There the reliability is zero 2 nun.Part replacement is a great big farce.Our govt.,is allowing them 2 flood our market wid their inferior junk, just leik their stereo equpt..They all use a lamp of some order. The DLP's,use a high powerd light,along wid a color wheel,that was
droppd frm idea bak in the 50's. Similar 2 the color wheels, that were used on the display
of Christmas tree's,only @ a faster speed,es using a vy small motor, wich doesn't hav a
hi rate of longevity.The LCD's.use hi power lights, in the projection tv's.,wich is anuther
hi rate of failure. The LCD. use 3 sets of panel type lamps, 4 baklighting,C.G.F.L es r mor fragile in transporting,as they r flat panel screen's.They hav a tendency of hi inverter failure, so it's best 2 carry insurance on them all. Plasma's r the closest 2 a Picture Tube,es r the only 1's that can produce blak.

In my opinion LCD is the better choice. Plasma has a shorter lifespan and no clear advantage over LCD.

Hi DPS, not sure if you're still looking for a TV. Thought I'd offer my $.02.

With Plasma television sets, the more you spend, the better quality you get. One of the problems that the lower end Plasma screens have is the ability to display black and dark colors. Some are too bright, and some just look terrible! Cheaper ones also have more artifacts (imperfections) such as jagged edges and other things that makes picture quality pretty bad.

If you're spending less than $1K, LCD is the way to go. I bought a Pioneer LCD for the bedroom and am currently shopping around for my main Home Theater/Family room. I'll probably go with LCD because the wife would have me sleeping on the couch throughout the new year if I spend over my budget. LCDs are still not quite as bright as Plasmas, but they're getting closer to matching the performance.

Are there a couple of brands you're thinking about going with?

If you are still TV shopping, I would suggest you look at various web sites to help decide what you want. WalMart and Best Buy's web sites lists several brands along with customers ratings and reviews about the merchandise. I do not necessarily recommend buying from either of them.

Just like DTV converter boxes there are lots of different capabilities of different sets. If you are in a rural area or possibly in the suburbs you would probably want a TV set with a tuner than will pull in the more distant stations. Most tuners are not designed to do that. Many brands of sets are made by the same companies. You normally do not know what you are really getting. To find out what sets are right for your area. One would assume that you local TV shops should know what works best in your area.

I think that you will find that all of them normally sell at full retail prices. I find that the big chain stores and discount stores are the same to higher prices than what you can buy an item for at a locally owned small business. It is always nice to support the local business that is there to help when you need it. It is important that you first research it for yourself so that you will know which dealer is probably telling the truth about their products.

DJS, what's your budget?? There's a huge difference in cost still between LCD and Plasma.

I don't know much about the flat panel TVs but isn't DLP supposed to be the best? I know whichever my son has needed a bulb replaces. It cost him over $100 but it was only a bulb replacement and he was back in business. Would that be plasma?

I would go with LCD all the way. Plasma's have a shorter lifespan than LCD's and generally the quality is worse. As for the brightness of a LCD. How much brightness do you want. My LCD is set at 35% right now and that is about as bright as my eyes can stand.

However if your looking for a brighter LCD, just wait a few months, ones with 100k times brightness are coming or so I have heard.

I personally would go with LCD and not plasma because plasma TVs can be damaged VERY easily and I heard that plasma TVs do not last nearly as long as LCD TVs.
