Default $40 Government coupon program is over: How to save money on converter boxes now

Now that the coupon program is done and people no longer can apply for $40 dtv coupons, thought I'd start a thread on where to save money if you still need to buy a converter box for cheap.

    - Buy a used converter box for about half the cost of a new one, but make sure you take the time to research the seller and view their buyer feedback.

-Check the used options on he right side of the page, there are a few selers selling the Magnavox-TB100MG9 for less than $35.00

    - The Airlink ATVC102 is not the most popular or highly favored converter, but the used section here as them for as low as $29.98

I was expecting a pricing war this weekend between converter box retailers, but may that won't happen until 3 months from now when everyone's coupons have been used or expired.

Yes, the end of the application period isn't going to be as significant is the point in time when the last coupons expire.

However, do retailers really have so much stock that they need a price war to move it out?

Sorry to hear that Demarco. They're selling for cheap on eBay right now, between $10-$25 depending on the type of box. During the transition, there were a lot of questions posted here about coupons never being delivered. I'm sure there were a few thefts from mailboxes due to the value of the coupons.

    Thanks for your service!

I helped many people last year with their converter boxes. I wound up with quite a few boxes when people gave me their extra coupon. With unemployment being so high now, some people are dropping cable. I have been able to help them with $10 boxes & you tube antennas. Some sources believe that broadcast TV may go away before too long. So those boxes will be worthless, at least in the USA.

neat that you could help out other people - that is admirable

no one needs to fret about free broadcast tv going away, the federal govt will not allow that, and the public would not stand for it, and the politicians would be to afraid that they would lose their cushy little jobs, and actually have to work for a living.

I don't think it will completely go away but the Govt will sure try hard to "reclaim" as much spectrum as it can, probably killing off some independents or forcing consolidation with larger broadcasters.

If those independents were serving the public adequately, then enough viewers would be watching them to immune them from reclamation.

In Quincy IL, NBC is 10.1, with CW and FOX on their sub-channels in SD. Some people think this is how our TV spectrum will be used in the near future. I can see expanded band width, (maybe not possible) with 5 sub-channels on each frequency. I'm thinking about doing a neighborhood survey of homes with new antennas. Do they have HD sets or converter boxes? And do they also have cable TV?

5 subchannels? Well you can forget HD then. That HD on that NBC station probably looks like crap with those 2 subchannels. And honestly if I have a HDTV I expect ALL major channels to be HD. No way I would be happy with CW and especially FOX in SD. And no there won't be any expanded bandwidth. Each channel has about 19 Mbps to work with whether they have 1 channel or 1 channel and 20 sub channels. If stations were broadcasting in mpeg-4 then you could do 2 HD channels possibly even 3. Of course not stations are doing that because no TVs have mpeg-4 tuners in them and if they did start broadcasting in mpeg-4 then everyone would need mepg-4 converter box. Considering the FCC's hurry to kill off OTA to give those frequencies to at&t and Verizon so they can give rural people "broadband" ( and it's 2 GB monthly caps and $10 per GB overage charges ) I don't see stations broadcasting in it ever.

Do you have boxes for $10? or do you know where I can get them as cheap as possible? I need 550 for 20 schools.

That is a pretty tall order. I don't think you'll be able to find those in the stores, certainly not at that price.

@Matt Rude: I wish I could help you. My first thought is Bill Gates Foundation... I just checked my stash. I only have 5 boxes left. I am saving those as replacements for boxes that may fail.

    Matt,

It's unlikely you will find any new Converter boxes for sale at ten bucks each, but you might be able to swing a decent volume discount from some place like WalMart. It could be a springboard for a TV commercial showing how they support their local community schools. I hope you have excellent negotiating skills. Good luck and keep us posted.
