Default How to transfer DVR recordings to Computer or hard drive

My hard drive keeps getting full with all of the shows we're recording. Is there a way to download some of the shows or movies to a computer or hard drive so I can make more room?

Probably not, if it's a DVR provided by a cable or satellite company.

(One more way they try to keep you as a customer: Pay TV providers know that if you leave them, you will lose all the content you recorded on "your" DVR when they take "their" DVR back.)

With DirecTV you can get their Nomad device and download shows off their HD DVRs or the newer R22. You can also sync to a mobile device or tablet such as an iPhone or iPad. It's a small device about the size of a wireless router. It works with the more recent ones such as Genie and these models: HR20, HR21, HR22, HR23, and HR24. It does not work with TiVo.

The Nomad is $149 one time cost with no additional monthly fees. It connects to your home network via wired ethernet (an RJ45 plug). Your DVR must be connected to your broadband internet and home network using either the ethernet port on the back of it (HR34 Genie) or via a BB DECA or CCK via the coax cable. Most DirecTV installs these days connect your DVR to the internet.

You can check if it is connected to the internet by pressing the right arrow on your DVR or remote while viewing live or recorded TV. If it is not connected you'll see a message saying that it is not.
