• Oprah's 'OWN' Network Goes Live

OWN Oprah Winfrey NetworkThe Oprah Winfrey Network, known as OWN, is on the air. The new network began televising on Saturday, January 1, providing previews of its series. The queen of daytime talk isn't a part of every show, of course, but her name is the backbone of the channel. This has caused the famous hostess some anxiety.

Winfrey told Parade Magazine, "First it was, 'Wowee, omigosh, a network!' And then it was, 'What in the world have I done?' and, 'Can I really do this?' so I had a lot of anxiety about it."

Replacing the Discovery Health Channel, Winfrey's hope for OWN is that it will stimulate the mind.

"What I want to do is build a channel that is a respite for your mind, an oasis of stimulation, that you come away from with little pieces of light. I’m aiming for a moment where somebody could say, 'I never thought of it that way before.' I just love that."

Shows on OWN include "Dr. Phil", a spin-off of Oprah's daytime talker; "The Gayle King Show", featuring Oprah's best friend who has already had one try at making a hit talk show of her own; and "Kidnapped by the Kids", where children are empowered to stop their parents from being workaholics.
