Cutting the cord: Starting life without cable

Staff member
My wife finally broke down.

After returning from work a few weeks ago my wife said she wanted to talk.

"I'm ready," she said. "Let's get rid of the cable."

This may seem a bit dramatic but I had been working on her for about a year, saying I wanted to do what many people call "Cutting the Cord".

We were ready to shed our $170 a month bill for telephone, Internet and cable television (including HBO).

She had finally said yes, so why was I concerned? Just how would we meet our media needs? How would we replace our 700-plus television channels -- of which we probably watched about 10 on a regular basis?..

There were a few more components we would need to address in order to make this work. We would want access to some basic channels for news and some major sporting events. The answer: An old-fashioned antenna, which we could pick up for about $10...

We were starting to formulate a plan that would hopefully get us away from the television more, make our viewing a bit more worldly and educational and save us a bunch of money.
