ABC's Dancing with the Stars finale turned out to be a show with both surprises and sentiment. In the final results show of the 16th season, it was a shocking moment that began in the two-hour event when host Tom Bergeron announced that the couple who came in fourth place was gymnast Aly Raisman. Along with her pro partner, Mark Ballas, Aly had finished the Monday evening performance show at the top of the leaderboard, having had a perfect night with two sets of three 10s from the judges plus getting the bonus five points for the special cha cha routine. The look on the judges' faces said it all: complete surprise at the elimination.

As the evening rolled on, Dorothy Hamill returned after having had to withdraw from the competition very early in the season due to an injury. Hamill had stated frequently that the reason she attempted DWTS was that when she was recovering from a bout of cancer she was inspired by fellow figure skater's Kristy Yamaguchi's appearance on the show. As Hamill danced the traditional last number with her partner, Yamaguchi suddenly appeared on stage with her dance partner, dancing the final segment alongside her idol. It made for an unexpected emotional segment.

Andy Dick's return dance was far less emotional and yet it had an appeal. Dick's troubles in the past with substance abuse had been mentioned quite a bit during his run on the show. In what was probably an odd thing for him, he developed a passion for the dancing and viewers rooted for him to succeed. Not a natural dancer by any means, the comedian lasted a few weeks beyond what his talent was worth, but no one complained. It was a victorious event for Dick to perform as well as did for as long as he remained a contestant.

The final hour saw the three remaining couples doing an instant dance, their last chance to please the judges and add to their scores. Football player Jacoby Jones and Karina Smirnoff performed a salsa, while both teams of country singer Kellie Pickler and Derek Hough and young Disney star Zendaya Coleman and partner Valentine Chmerkovskiy danced the jive. No surprises there as all three couples performed with the anticipated perfection of finalists.

The big reveal began with a lovely performance by Jessica Sanchez of "Feel This Moment" that was sung with the top three teams on the top steps, listening. Behind them, big screens replayed various moments of the pairs' journey from throughout the show's competition. It truly was a lovely way to wrap it up.

Then the third place team was announced: Jacoby and Karina, as it should have been.

The winner of this sensational season of Dancing with the Stars, one full of top notch dancing and pairs, are Kellie and Derek. This gives Derek Hough four wins since joining the show in season five. It was an awesome win for the dancer who took PIckler, who had never danced before, and instilled in her a passion for dance. The couple had begun the evening repeating their freestyle dance from Monday that had ultimately been the top voted routine by voters on Twitter. They ended the night hoisted atop their competitors' shoulders, holding the Mirror Ball Trophy.

Now fans wait to see if Hough returns for another season and which celebrities will next capture their hearts as they discover the joy of the dance.
