DirecTV in Miami and Boston Cuts Off Local Broadcasting Channels

#3
Saw on my local news tonight that the local broadcasters ended up caving in for the NFC Championship game today and allowed DirecTV to show it. They may not for the Superbowl though. Apparently, the local broadcasters want a 300% increase in fees.

TG,

Are you sure the local (free via OTA) Broadcasters want "an increased fee" or are the paid-for suppliers hungry for an increased fee?

Both.

Free TV is only via OTA. DirecTV and others pay the broadcasters a fee to carry their channels via retrans consent/must carry rules.

However, I should point out that cable and sat providers have been raking in increased profits due to rate hikes, which means that the rate hikes aren't just because retrans fees are higher, but also because the cable and sat companies want to boost their profits. The broadcasters just happen to be a convenient scape goat.

Regarding the 300% fee they're asking for,

DirecTV has said that Sunbeam is demanding a 300 percent increase in its retransmission-consent fees. In an interview with one his own reporters, WSVN-TV EVP and GM Robert Leider insists the broadcaster isn't demanding a significant fee for its programming.
"Fundamentally we're asking for pennies. If you go from one cent to two cents, it's 100 percent," Leider said.

1. Put up TV antenna.
2. Connect coax to 50+" big screen HDTV.
3. Find homes with DirecTV dishes on the roof.
4. Invite DirecTV owners to watch Superbowl at your place. Charge admission.
5. PROFIT!
