Egypt Bans Arabic Broadcaster Al-Jazeera

"DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- The pan-Arab broadcaster Al-Jazeera said Sunday that Egyptian authorities ordered the closure of its Cairo news hub overseeing coverage of the country's massive street protests, denouncing the move as an attempt to "stifle and repress" open reporting.

The Qatar-based network has given nearly round-the-clock coverage to the unprecedented uprising against Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and had faced criticism by some government supporters and other Arab leaders as a forum to inspire more unrest." ...

Gah, I watched Al Jazeera for parts of the day Friday and Saturday, definitely the best coverage hands-down.

No surprise at all. Governments absolutely hate Al-J because they are not 24x7 praise the regime like state run TV is.

You guys should have seen Iraqi TV at the start of the gulf war. 24x7 praise Saddam.

Al Jazeera still seems to be running very good coverage of the event. They've stopped naming or giving the locations of their correspondents but they're still getting regular reports.
