PARIS — Workers tried to shut down France on Tuesday with strikes affecting transportation, schools and the postal service in a showdown with President Nicolas Sarkozy over his government's attempt to raise the retirement age by two years to save money.

Pity the French. Full-time workers in France are guaranteed at least five weeks vacation, 35 hour work weeks, two hour lunches, free health care, and retirment now is at age 60.

Somehow, I am not feeling much sympathy when they cry over having their retirement age raised to 62.
